a-yup, my guides cover all the basic things you need to start customizing. There's different ways you can go when customizing too. Repaints, gluing stuff on, swapping head/arms/legs, or sculpting new features. Say you want to make a deadpool because you can't find one right? You buy a Black Panther ML 10, dremel down the ears and claws. You use Apoxie Sculpt to make his bootcuffs and gloves. Grab a belt from Bullseye and some little pouches from a Captain America figure. Then you make his bandolier straps from strips of plastic or foam. You then attach everything, then paint him like Deadpool. Yeah that's a really basic rundown (as there's more steps to sculpting and painting) but that's what Customizing is.
There's no places that sell little parts, usually you have to buy some action figures for 'fodder', that is figures you know you're going to cut up and use pieces from. Some people hit garage sales for loose figures, some trade with friends, or buy extra figs when they're on sale at Wal mart or KayBee.

The greatest lesson I learned is to never throw a figure away once you've taken the part you want from him. Say you buy a figure just to use the head, don't throw the body away because you can bet your bottom dollar a week or a month later you'll be kicking yourself for not keeping the arms or something. Been down that road MANY times.
