Marvel Select needs to step up!

Recommended Posts

I had a great thought the other day. There is a huge void right now in the area of well made 6 or 7 inch Marvel figures (duh). I think that Diamond could capitalize big time on doing waves of Marvel Select figures like they do with World of Warcraft and DC figures (among others i'm sure). Right now they give us about 4 or 5 (not counting variants) figures spread out over of the span of a year. I'm thinking they could do waves of 3 or 4 figures (ala WoW) 2 or 3 times a year and fill the BAF spot with deluxe figures (once again like WoW). They have very little (pun INtended) competition from Hasbro right now and it would be a great time to step up & fill the void! Their price scale is higher [($20 for regular figs, $30 for deluxe (WoW deluxe figs are $27)] but they don't come out as often as Marvel Legends did, they are better quality (although they usually have less articulation...better than hasbro's though), come with bases and we wouldn't have to buy every figure in the line to get the bigger figure. WoW figs are sold in comic book shops and Toys R Us so they could do the same with these. Same production numbers as well. This would definitely be aimed at collectors and not kids like hasbro tries to push so much. What are your thoughts!?

They need to stop making characters that have already been made in ML form.

So you are telling me you wouldn't want a MS Beast or Namor? I think they should make figures that haven't been touched yet, but I would also like to see the horrible ML sculpts re-done in MS form. I would love an epic Banshee or Nightcrawler.

I agree with Ender. They need to make new characters. Big guys like Terrax, Tusk with tusk clone, Ch'od (Re-sculpt Abombination), Warstar, Attuma, Griffin, Blastaar, Strong Guy, A-Bomb, Orka, and I could keep going. There are so many characters that are big that can be made, they don't even have to be big just new. I would even buy a classic Beetle or a some that is worth remaking like another figure of Ultron. Making spider-man and wolverine is great and all, but these don't make a national store inventory just stores like FYE and our local comic shops. They are directed towards collectors, not the everyday fan. As a collector I want things that are different then stuff I already have.

I also agree. MS making avergae sized characters is just a waste of time for me. I don't care who the sculpt is, I will just pass it by. Nothing wrong with them trying to cash in on the popularity of a character like Wolverine or Deadpool but please show some balance. Give us Terrax one month, Odin the next, then a Deadpool, followed by Gladiator, Blastaar, then a Wolverine, Armadillo, Warstar, Spiderman, Orka, Juggernaut, Daredevil, check it out, I just planned what last year should have been like for them. Give us some money maker every other month or so and stuff we wanna buy to fill in our collections. This product usually doesn't sell at mass market retailers so they need our buying power even more then normal ML do. Make what we want and we can support your company.

i dont know why ms should do it? ok everyone is pissed at hasbro for the hole in every ml collection but it isnt ms obligation to do so. sure i am so happy when they do it but ms is a line of its own. how would you feel if you are just good to fill some void? i believe that daredevil, wolverine, hulk and spiderman still do more money then lets say terrax or stegron. if ms has to survive, they need to do money. money lies in the big names. favors dont fill the bank account. ms is doing just fine with doing some a listers. look how every one is all jumpy with deadpool. after i got my hulk, i cant wait for the thing to arrive. i am so happy that they are still there to do some good figs for us not like hasbro. i even think that they listen more to fans then hasbro. they allready talked about juggernaut and even odin. give it time guys, ms listens to us and they will do a lot of great figs for 2010. fingers crossed.

You don't find these at normal mass market retailers for toys. Not at Target, Walmart, and rarely at Toysrus. You find these at places like Suncoast, or other smaller places, order direct from Diamond, or even your local comic shop, which also accounts for their higher pricing. Thus that makes these more of a specialty item and you don't have this product in front of the MAJORITY of children who may influence their parents to buy a big name product like Wolverine, Ironman, or Spiderman. If you connect those dots logically then that would make you realize that they need COLLECTORS to buy this product since it is getting in front of the places we go to buy them, not the kiddies. If they are going to cater to us collectors then and not mass market, then they should make the products WE want and not those products they feel are just gonna be bIG sellers based on the Hasbro ML selling model. They don't have the type of facings or advertising that Hasbro gets with their products. Smaller market means more specialty shops and customers. US the buyer control the MS brand EVEN more so then what would come out in a ML line since kids get in front of those at big retailers. So if they want to make money, be successful, and continue the MS brand, they should offer figures that we will support. It really has nothing to do with their obligation to "fill" our line ups with missing bigger figures, it is just they need us more then we need their products. We are asking to give our money away to them, yet they don't seem to truly want it.

Just because you want them to, doesn't mean they need to. I like MS figures I own a couple of them , and some of their figures work well with Marvel Legends but they are their own line not a ML filler. I would also love if Diamond made big figures that don't exist in ML form but just because Hasbro is crapping out in the MLs department doesn't mean that Diamond "needs to step in and fill a void" to please a few collectors.

i agree with belmont. MS is their own line, and they shouldnt have to dohasbro's job. nor should they have to be a "run to" company. you guys may not believe this, but....theres a lot of MS collectors out there! (enough to keep the line going at least)

First off I realize that I confused Diamond with DC Direct. Just to clear that up. Now to the point. I wasn't saying MS HAS to fill the void or that they HAVE to be second best and something that we run to since we don't have anything else. I was just sugesting an idea that I thought would be totally awesome and I wanted to know what other people with the same interests thought. Obviously you all thought it was the stupidest idea anyone could ever think of. I still think it's awesome.

Of course they will continue to make A list character and of course they only sell these in specialty shops...I don't know what sugested that I didn't know that. Other than the fact that Toys r Us could sell them like they do WoW figs. I know that they are aimed toward collectors...that was the point I was making. MS doesn't HAVE to do this. I just think they could do well with this idea.

Also: Deadpool is great and awesome and is gaining a lot of popularity...but he is hardly an A List character.

maybe the competition would make hasbro change its attitude of " you'll get it when WE feel like it" to "Hey,we have ACTUAL news and releases more than twice a year". and....

maybe if marvel select is it's own line and should not be affiliated with ML maybe it should have it's own FORUM SECTION.

ML is a 6" line. MS is a 6.5 or 7" line. You can't fit a square peg into a round hole.

This has nothing to do with replacing Marvel Legends. It has to do with collector's not having much to buy. I thought they (we) would gobble up lots of sweet Marvel Select figures in this terribly boring time of Marvel action figure collecting. It's obvious that collectors will buy most anything (look at all the Marvel Universe converts). I just thought Marvel Select would sell alot in this time where Hasbro has given up on us. I guess I was the only one. I don't even know why I'm still defending myself. I thought you all were more open minded to ideas.

Unless they are going to do 6" scale, I'd rather MS stick to the larger characters. Ones I can fit into my display.

Let's be honest here. Most of the Marvel Select stuff just rots away on pegs. I can walk into my local comic store and find every single one on the shelf, hell I can walk in and take a picture and load it up for proof even. I could also walk into a local place, called Suncoast Video (now FYE) and find them peg warming there until they decided to clearance them for half off. I find it hard to believe that many of you TOTALLY support MS in all of the toys that they do. My guess is that most of you bought the Thanos, Watcher, Cloak & Dagger, Brood/Skrull. Red Hulk, Thor, all the ones needed to fill in your ML scale figures. Few of you may have bought the Thor product &/or the Ironman product, but as a whole buying MS is probably a lot more selective to purchase since we all that ALL of us usually take the scale into account when purchasing. I would wager that none of you buy everything that MS releases the way MOST of us do for ML products.

well, when MS started, ML was still going....so im pretty sure that people cherry picked through the selection. but if there was no ML, would MS be so "irrelevent"? and a correct statement would be..."lets be honest here, MS figs just rotts away on pegs in YOUR area. ofcourse MS is dragging because of ML.(no brainer) but MS is its own line. no different than any other. but its crazy to say that MS cant have a shot at producing a character just because "legends" has one. i keep telling everyone that this is one of the ONLY group of collectors(marvel) that has trouble accepting multiple companies making multiple products for fig lines. if DCUC line dies, DC collectors arent going to say "DC direct should only make figs that mattel hasnt done. indie comic collectors dont do it either...just mavel. the bad: hasbro is not going to give you what you want....sorry. the good: we have a chance at another marvel line that might go all the way.(like mattel's doing with DC) it seems as if MS is working on their articulation, so i dont see a problem besides a few collectors that dont want to trade up....nothing lasts forever.

Totally agree with your statement Pooda. Thus you must understand the frustration of having such a great company making marvel toys, yet going the route of it's money hungry step brother, Hasblow. The potentia is greater with what MS can do for the collector fan base. I don't think their support for the majority of other more main stream characters is really there. I give them props for trying some thing new, but it seems like they could effectively stagger in some of the bigger more desireable characters and still work in some more profitable targetted ones as well. Would it be so terrible for them to cater to a few of the bigger selections say every 3rd month they were to put out a product? Could they do more mainstream big characters as well? MS Hulk. Red Hulk sold well, Thor, Thing will, Abomination will be a best seller for sure, don't you think a Gladiator or Odin would do just as well?
