Just started collecting. Advice?

Well after graduating college and finally getting some resources (both time and money) to get into collecting marvel figures I have a few questions...

First off, I am a big fan of displaying. I have multiple glass cabinets which I put Legos and other collectibles in to display. With that said, I still like articulation to a degree so that I can pose figures in cool positions. Articulation however, is not my main priority.

My friend has been collecting for quite some time and he loves the Marvel Legends line. He loves the articulation. He told me to keep an eye out for ML figs. He suggested that I however check out Marvel Select since I am not as big on articulation, I just want an accurate and detailed figure.

So far I have purchased the following marvel selects:

-Thing

-Loki (Thor movie version)

-Colossus

-Skrull and Brood

-Green Goblin

-Cyclops

I have purchased the following 6'' figure line from Marvel Legends:

-Nick Fury & Captain America double pack

-Thor (modern version)

I am really trying to get the best representation from a visual standpoint first and articulation second. Could you guys give some input on the following characters (I am looking to buy):

-Venom (marvel select has an ultimate version, but very expensive)

-Spiderman (big spidy fan, 616 or ultimate)

-Carnage

-Iron Man (Mark IV, VI, or VII movie)

-Captain America (modern/movie style suit)

-Black Widow (MS has a black widow but she has no accessories...no guns...)

-Hawkeye (I like the MS movie version- good, bad?)

-Doc Oc

-Lizard (may just wait for MS movie version)

-Magneto

-Wolverine

-Juggernaut (HUGE fan of the MS version)

-Deadpool

-Phoenix/Jean Grey

-Sabertooth

-Abomination (MS has awesome version no?)

-Professor Xavier

-Storm (upcoming MS version...any pics?)

-Gambit

-Rogue

-Iceman

-Human Torch

-Black Panther

-Daredevil

-Thanos

-Odin

-Galactus

-Silver Surfer

-Moon Knight (I know there is a MS, but cannot find ANYWHERE for sale...HELP)!

-Winter Soldier

-Red Skull (like the movie version from MS/ML, thoughts?)

-War Machine (friend stated there is a armored avenger legend series 6'')

-Mandarin

-Ant Man/Giant Man

-Wasp

-Beast (newer Xmen incarnation)

-Mystique

-Blade

-Dr Doom

-Dr Strange

-Emma Frost

-Iron Fist

-Kree

-MODOK

-Namor

-Nightcrawler (upcoming MS version...any pics?)

-Rhino (upcoming MS version looks great)

-Sandman

-Scarlet Witch

-Quicksilver

-Scorpion

-Sentinel

-Vision

-Vulcher

I know it is a long list but, I am here to begin my road to collecting a version of each. Can you guys/gals also recommend sites that have news updates when a figure is announced/leaked? I am brand new to this whole figure hunting and following so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Lets see. IMO I think these are the nicer figures sculpt wise.

Venom. There is a related Spiderman line venom from 4 or 5 years ago that's a very nice sculpt. he does have as silly knob in his back for a jaw moving gimmick but it's not really a problem. The earlier ML version from a Fearsome Foes pack I think is okay but really expensive.

Spiderman. I hear there is a Mcfarlane Styled Spiderman that is very popular amongst fans sculpt as well as articulation wise. I've seen a few reasonably prices on ebay.

Iron Man. There is a Modern Armor ML figure that I think is great sculpt wise. I recommend that one.

Captain America. Personally I prefer the ultimate styled Captain America I think it ML wave 7 or 8.

Black Widow. There is a old ML Black Widow but she is not a great figure. More recently a better mold was released in a TRU 2 pack (I forgot with who). She is not cheap imo.

Hawkeye. There are only 2 Hawkeye ML figures. One is from 5 or more years back and the movie version. Both are nice but if you want to go with the old style the first fits the bill. Sadly both are expensive too.

Doc OC. I only have the old ML version. The mold itself is great but lacks articulation. His arms make up for it though.

Magneto. I have a old Xmen five pack version of him. There is a earlier version that has a different head but all else is the same. He may seem dated by today's standard but sculpt wise he is okay. I think he shares body parts with the early Iron Man figure. There is also a old ML related Xmen line version that is a good sculpt but comes with a gimmick. He is a bit short also.

Wolverine. I personally like the old ML brown costumed verison. He is either ML waves 6,7 or 8 I think. Sculpt wise he is great. The next runner up is the Age of Apocalypse version that came out a few years later.

Juggernaut. I have the old ML and movie versions. Sculpt wise the old ML is great with good paint apps. He is not as large as the MS version but he is bigger than the ML movie version. Price wise the MS verison may be cheaper.

Jean Grey. I have two versions, the old ML version and the Hasbor version which had a early costume. I think she was called Marvel Girl. The older figure shared the same body as Black Widow but I think it's modified in some areas. The Marvel Girl version is not as nice imo, it lacks paint apps and articulation plus she seems bland compared to the old one.

Sabretooth. I have two versions. The older ML and a WM exclusive version that came out several years later. They are both great figures and are both great sculpts. The original is the most commonlyt known version of the character while the second is from the Age of Apocalypse story line.

I have more recommendations but I'll finish up tommorow.

Ok, here you go. My definitive list with links to each in the database.

I want to let you know, that MS figures are great for larger characters like Juggernaut, Colossus, Sabretooth, etc.. but "normal" characters, like Captain America, Wolverine, Spider-Man, will all be too big if you're mixing them with Marvel Legends. My advice as a fellow displayer is to keep MS and ML separate. For example, MS has been releasing a lot of classic X-Men lately (Colossus, Storm, and Nightcrawler as you mentioned). While these figures will all look great together, they will not (except Colossus) fit into your Marvel Legends collection.

For that reason, I've recommended Marvel Legends for each of your wants, but I've indicated which I think MS would be a reasonable substitution.

Welcome and enjoy!

I agree with pretty much everything Spang said except for the Namor figure. That Hasbro Namor is one of the worst action figures ever produced, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The ML2 Namor is actually pretty decent, it just lacks a little bit of the articulation that some of the others have.

I also wouldn't recommend movie figures to be your definitive version of anyone, but it seems that you like movie figures better than classic figures.

And finally, Marvel Select figures do not mix with Marvel Legends, like Spang said. Marvel Select figures are way too tall. They are 7 inch-scale, while ML figures are 6 inches of course. And if you are going to be displaying them on the same shelf, it won't work. So like your Cyclops is going to look like he is 7 feet tall, and tower over the other Xmen. Also, your Green Goblin is too tall, and IMO inferior to the ML13 version anyways.

You know Clam, I've always wondered if your signature was supposed to be sarcastic. Guess I got my answer!

Of course, I disagree, but to each their own. I also like the original version and have both in my collection. I like the Hasbro Namor displayed with my classic Cap and Bucky as part of an Invaders team.

I only like movie versions for certain characters...Iron Man in particular. Captain America looks pretty good from the movies, but I also love his Ultimate outfit.

I am not a fan of the Xmen movie versions, as a I grew up on their classic looks.

As for the MS line being too big, I compiled some heights from Marvel's official wiki and my cyclops and colossus are both to scale. Cyclops is 6' tall and Colossus is 7'5'' transformed. My MS Colossus is about 2'' taller than Cyclops so that seems to make sense. Also my ML Modern Thor for whatever reason fits in scale with the MS line I have displayed (has he is 6'6'' and is about 3/4 of an inch taller than cyclops). The only thing that kind of bugs me is how tall Thing is. He has been listed as 6' forever, but I guess more recent illustrations make him much bigger and out of proportion (which I am OK with).

I guess my question is...are ML to scale with each other, or are they just all an arbitrary 6''?

It all depends. Most of the ToyBiz figures are in scale with each other, and most of the Hasbro figures are in scale with each other, but the Hasbro figures tend to run a little small when compared to the ToyBiz versions. The best example I can think of is with Vision since he's a character both Hasbro and ToyBiz made. If you compare the two, you'll see that the Hasbro version is less bulky.

As to your point about MS Cyclops and Colossus, they will be the proper ratio to each other since theyre both MS. But, if you compared the MS Cyclops to an ML Cyclops, you would see the difference.

However, the difference in scale is less noticable with the bigger characters such as Colossus and Juggernaut. These guys are so massive in the comics that they look fine standing with smaller ML figures.

Ultimately, I don't get hung up on specifics because no matter what Marvelpedia or whatever lists the heights at, different artists are always going to scale the characters a little differently. I think with collecting, you'll be much better off getting figures you like and think look good together than spending too much time worrying about the height ratios between individual characters.

See the attached pics for what I mean. As you can see, Juggernaut and Colossus both look to scale with all the other ML figures in there. But, say you replaced the Cyclops in the X-Men pic with the MS version, he would look too big compared to Wolverine, Phoenix, etc.

that makes sense. It kind of stinks that MS decided to base it off a 7'' scale rather than a 6'' because I really do like the detail and sculpt of some of their figures, but you are right the cyclops is a good 1'' taller...

:(

If MS made every figure that I listed, I would probably just buy all MS, but since they do not I have to buy ML if I want to display together.

Yeah, character selection is something that ML definitely has going for it. But as with anything, buy what you like and skip what you don't. I had a bad habit once of feeling like I *had* to get figures I didn't even like or want just to complete a display or a team. I've since gotten better about it and gotten rid of those figures, but every once in a while I'll go to buy a figure and have to ask myself, "Do I really want this?"

Youre fortunate that you have just begun, so you can really make your collection whatever you want it to be.

I have fallen into that trap in the past with Legos...thinking, "gee, do I really want to buy this?"

Unfortunately with Marvel, I am such a longtime fan of so many characters, I will probably end up with the list I posted, albeit some are much more obscure than others.

As for that MoonKnight MS figure...if you could check your comic book shop (mine have 0), I would definitely pay you for it with a finders premium.

marvel select is great for bigger figures like juggernaut, watcher and some that are sometimes bigger then life. i love the 90's era of comics and i love these big guys from marvel select. to me they fit. now smaller ones like deadpool or cyclops arent fitting well with marvel legends to me. then select makes way better figures then hasbro. not every figure is a reuse of parts.

I guess I have just not seen a large character from a ML set (like Hulk or Juggernaut) to know if they are to scale with the rest.

The only reason I made the comment about the cyclops being to scale with the colossus from MS is because if people say to get the MS for bigger figures (Hulk, Abomination, Thing, Juggernaut, Colossus, etc.) then I thought maybe the other MS were to scale with some of the ML too. I guess not :/

Sorry if these questions are dumb, I am just new to this whole collection of figures.

Spang- I cannot find for the life of me that Spiderman figure you recommended. If it is super rare, I am not interested in paying $100+ for a figure.

Any thoughts? Options?

Hasbro released the same sculpt only with all the blue parts of the costume painted black. I forgetwhat it was called, but it came with a street light accessory. You should be able to find it for $10-$15 i would think.

Edit: here you go. http://marvelousnews.com/database/index.php?itemid=1309

awesome, thanks.

I am going to definitely look around for a good poseable spiderman, because he is one of the few characters I really want a lot of articulation in.

Yeah the MS Thanos is wicked. Welcome to the wonderful world of collecting calisupra! I think it's important to not give in to the "gotta have 'em all now" mentality that can happen. be patient keep an eye on local retailers and comic shops and set a price you're willing to pay for each of those figures you want, and stick to it (keeping in mind that rarity of some of them will make them more expensive). If you're patient and pay attention you'll have a lot of fun!
