As to the topic of discussion. Those trying to bring politics into this seemingly do so to avoid the actual problem with what he said. Yes the reason why someone went and dug up these old comments originally was politically motivated but that doesn't change the fact of just how bad his comments where and why many people regardless of political affiliation were and still are offended by them. IMO Disney should have been aware of these comments before they ever hired him (and there are many indications they were) and should have found someone else for these movies to begin with to avoid this entire mess, but they didn't.

Yes people do and say stupid things and can change, but there are certain things that become very hard to just write off as being young and ignorant or being said as a joke. I don't care how old you are, or what time period you grew up in, there are certain things that are just universally bad and unjustifiable and if you really take the time and read all his comments he made in public, I think they fit that bill.

IDK in today's society the lines of right and wrong get blurred so badly and generally anyone can make an argument on social media for one side or the other. I see people refusing to believe that Michael Jackson did anything wrong, and I don't know exactly what happened at Neverland, but you could definitely see there were signs of something being very off there and yet people were and still are willing to look past it because there isn't 100% proof and they enjoy his music.

Since Gunn has never been actually accused of rape or pedophilia let alone convicted I am not advocating his life should be destroyed, but I do think there are def signs of something being off there and someone like that should not be working on projects made primarily for kids.

Good points, but people need to remember that while Marvel Studios knew about the tweets beforehand, Disney did not. Disney expects Marvel Studios (and Lucasfilm and Pixar) to perform due diligence on all hires themselves. Contrary to popular belief, Disney can't micromanage all aspects of each division and subsidiary.

Regardless of all that, as we've seen on this thread, this is a no-win situation for Disney. Fire Gunn and get accused of "kowtowing" to the right and overreacting to ancient mistakes; keep him or rehire him and get told they're working with a man capable of disgusting behavior or possible pedophilia. They're held to a higher standard than other studios/companies and they hold themselves to a higher standard. In the end, as I said earlier, a thorough investigation was conducted, the results of which convinced Disney that Gunn wasn't a degenerate sex-fiend and they could rehire him.

That is direct to the point. I remember both the Michael Jackson and R. Kelly fiascos vividly 15 years ago. It was an uphill battle on the prosecution's part. Friends and families of the accusers were paid off, before and after the dates of the supposed crimes, and they were all complicit in the cover-up's. Of course, they were both let off the hook at the time. No one's ever gonna be sure what happened but we all know something probably did. Shoot to 15 years later, now the same people who who speaking out for them and helping their case are piling in them and convicting them in the court of opinion. Why now, because they are old and washed up and have little use for them in the public eye. Put it into prospective. How can you burn down Michael Jackson who's only ever had accusations against him with zero actual proof, yet let Gunn off the hook when he has countless vile, distasteful pedophelic comments directly from his mouth. Argue that they were done in jest, that's fine, it's not for any of us to decide, but they were bad and persistent and had any of us "normal" folk done that we'd have no job and be ostracized from society altogether. Gunn makes good movies and he has a lot of pull in shaping societal opinions, so they still need him.

I just watched Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 yesterday, and I think no other director would be capable of making a sequel for this franchise keeping its tone and complex emotions. It is the most personal and director driven series of movies within the MCU, so I'm glad James Gunn is back to direct this last chapter.

Yes!!!! I’m so glad!!!! I was really worried about how Vol. 3 was going to turn out without James.

When the news broke that they would still use his script it gave me a glimmer of hope, and now woth this news I have full confidence it’ll be great now!!!!

I’m glad Marvel/Disney rehires him because GOTG was James love child and he made it into the great franchise it is today! If he wasn’t for him, imagine how different I fingy War and Endgame would be. James deserves to have his job back and I’m glad he finally has it now.

I agree wholeheartedly.  I read a quote for Taika Waititi when he was silencing the rumors that he would helm GotG 3 saying that he would never do a movie that had such a personal stamp from another director on it and that there was no way anyone that did would be able to do it justice.  Pretty crazy to think about when most of the cape films these days have a pretty cookie cutter feel to them (recent Marvel excluded).

No one could have done with these movies what James Gunn does, and the cast members, contractually obligated to be there, would not have had their hearts in it without him.  Very happy James is coming back.  This also makes him the first director to be helming a DC movie and then a Marvel movie back to back, which is a pretty cool distinction.

@Gmen4ever you’re my spirit animal on a message forum lol. I assume you’re a giants fan, as am I, and I agree with everything you said.  The hypocrisy & double standard unfortunately is a non-issue because the media is run by the left. It’s sickening. Taking politics out of this, which is so hard to do at this point, but doing it anyway, it’s probably best for the movie and MCU’s sake... but. My two favorite forms of entertainment are football and marvel lol, and both of them seem to be intertwined in the bowels of the left.

Oh yeah, been a Giants fans since the Phil Simms days. It seems that the left will pull crap that was done or said 20-30-40 yrs ago by someone they don't like, to now crucify them be they dead or alive. How come you don't ever see the right pulling this immature, childish crap? Anyway, I'm glad Gunn is back to helm GOTG3 & look forward to SS2 as well.  Like I said before, people that live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks.

Well Disney actually got scared that they could not get another hit after Endgame so they decided to regire him. To me that is what happened. The Russo Brothers are out after this last movie and they need a director that can get people into theaters and put in motion the expand to the cosmic realml plan they have.

I see your thought process, but I’m not sure if I agree that was why Disney re-hired him.  I think they have a pretty solid franchise with GotG and they didn’t want to tank it like they have with Star Wars recently.  They pulled a WWE, and cut him loose to let the bad PR die down a bit and make it seem like they did the right thing (when in fact it had the opposite effect) likely with intentions of rehiring him later on anyway.  After all, they never scrapped his script and none of the actors saying they were going to leave ever actually did.  I think they passed on the info to those who needed to know what the plan was going to be in terms of bringing James back, and then waited what they felt was the right time, then made a huge “look at what we did!” announcement on the heels of Captain Marvel’s success because they are seeing audience sentiments start to shift.
