Marvel Legends 6" X-Men Vintage Wave 90's Iceman Figure Video Review And Images

Recommended Posts

Solid review, thank you: the whole wave of these are great & I pre-ordered the wave on day one, and rubbing hands in anticipation.

He's not perfect, but there's no huge or glaring issues/problems here, so Hasbro's batting average on X-Men based Marvel Legends is still superb.

I think it's a shame that the BAF-less retro wave is so much better than the X-Force [Wendigo BAF] wave, and can't help thinking that the retro wave should have been 8 figs:

Silver Samurai, Storm, Iceman, Dazzler, Nightcrawler, X-Factor Cyclops, Mr Sinister & John Buscemi Logan.

The thing is that ALL of the figures above - with the exception of Logan - were actually released by Toy Biz (well, Storm was in her early 1990's black costume, but close enough).

An amended - and more consistent - 6 figure X-Force wave could then run with:  X-Force Wolverine, Boom Boom, Cannonball (with legs, goddamnit), Thunderbird II (James Proudstar) and either Sunspot or Rictor and Feral or Syrin.

Guardian could then be pulled for a bespoke Alpha Flight wave, or an AF-themed three-pack. Basically, pick your figures there...one can dream.

Love the idea of an Amazing Friends 3-pack too (that's surely a no brainer, what with Hasbro's love for repacking at least 4 Spider-Man figures per year), This MUST have a 'block of ice' accessory for Bobby, though. You know, that thing Iceman seals himself into for no apparent reason before using his powers. Alternatively, I wouldn't sniff at a New Defenders (1980's version) 3-pack either: two easy partial repaints of Iceman & Angel (red & white costume, w/halo) and an easy redeco: Beast (new head, hands) or Valkyrie (I) (new head, torso).

I only have one gripe with this new Iceman figure, and that is his icy skin looks too white, it should be light blue, like his ice slide accessory.

Sigh. One of the biggest misconceptions with Hasbro Marvel Legends rears its head again, informed by second or third-hand recitations of pseudo-facts on message boards. There's no embargo on Firestar, no problems with mutants and never has been.

Famous misconceptions

[#1] - Hasbro have never mixed X-Men/Mutants with Avengers in their action figure assortments, because of licensing issues and Marvel politics or personnel. Marvel Legends must thus focus on one property only.

Wrong. Look at every Marvel Universe wave ever (you know, the 3.75" scale line that they actually called Marvel Legends). There was NEVER a time that this line didn't straddle all corners of the Marvel Universe: Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight, Inhumans, Avengers, Defenders, X-Men etc. How could this happen with the alleged rights issue?

Also, look at Black Panther Wave 1 - which mixed up Inhumans, Mutants, MCU & Fantastic Four. Or Red Onslaught/Onslaught. And there are many, many more examples: Cloak & Dagger & Elektra & Daredevil in a Spider-Man assortment. Runaways Nico in a Dr Strange Assortment  Captain Britain in an MCU Captain America wave.

[#2] With Marvel Legends, Hasbro have always had character/property exclusive focussed waves - MCU or comic-based Avengers waves would never have other MU properties/characters, likewise Spider-Man & X-Men.

Kind of a variant on #1, but also wrong. As above, you can take Scarlet Witch from the old Odin/Aged Thor wave (a mutant, sometime X-Man etc) and go from there (or go back further to Hasbro's weirdly mixed first waves). One of the best examples: SDCC Book of Vishanti includes key characters from Thor, Dr Strange, Avengers & X-Men, but it's way harder to find a 100% 'pure' Avengers/Spider-Man/X-Men/GotG/Deadpool line than a multi-book/property/license assortment. Black Panther wv 2 & Captain Marvel wv. 1 are possibly the only ones there are (and the latter of those fails on Genis & Grey Gargoyle). Basically, if a  character is popular/viable and fits the price point, they're in.

[#3.1] Hasbro don't have the rights for X-Men/Mutants & F4 (film or comic), but [#3.2] now that Disney owns Fox, they can make X/F4 movie-based, or figures from TV shows like Runaways, Gifted, Legion etc.

3.1 is one you hear a lot less nowadays (it would be tough to argue with multiple Deadpool/X-Men/X-Force waves), but Disney's acquisition of Fox has caused some head scratching. To simplify: what is likely to change in the Hasbro Marvel Legends Universe? What will Hasbro start doing that they didn't before? Answer: very little & nothing. They're never going to do a wave of Logan or First Class figures, or FF movie figures. People here may remember the stink of X3 figures like Beast, Juggernaut & Colossus. They tried 'em, learnt lessons and moved on.

So, unless you have full details of the Hasbro/Marvel (Disney) licensing agreement, why go there?

Personally, I'd say Hasbro are covering every niche, nook & cranny of the MU & MCU really, really well. Everyone - myself included - has a wish-list of characters not yet immortalised in plastic (Squirrel Girl is all I'll say here) or teams not yet focussed on (Alpha Flight, Thunderbolts, Defenders) but I'm just going to cross my fingers & wait patiently to see what goodies they throw at me. And, if it's not immediately forthcoming, licensing is usually the last issue that would stop it.

Glad I still have my ToyBiz ice sled! Can’t wait to get him!

Same here! I also have that iced-up Sentinel hand diorama from the Toybiz ML. I bet that will look pretty rad too.

I appreciate the pics with the original X-Men all together.

I like Iceman's mold, but I wish they had matched the color of his body to his slide and ice beam.  If not for the belt, I could see some mistaking him for the Silver Surfer.

Ice beam accessory isnt from Iceman, its from storm collectibles sub zero.  But the ice slide, if you can even really call it that, shouldve been better in all aspects.. even the color matching.

Classic Ice-man looks good but not great. He really could have popped with some subtle blue highlights and some nicer Ice accessories over the pretty lame looking ice stand he comes with. I will definitely add some blue highlights onto mine once I get him.

I'm liking the look of it. But if the head had just a little less hair it would've looked much better. Plus if there was just a tiny bit of a blue icy hue in the plastic then it would be more accurate. There's absolutely none on this figure.

Unless I can find one w/o the line going down the center of the head/face syndrome, I'm gonna hold off on getting him till they either fix the issue or re-release him later on with both closed fist/open hands as they should have done from the get go.

    • Believe it or not, they did release a Satana back in the 2013 SDCC Exclusive Thunderbolts boxed set.  It's not the classic look of course, but was pretty far from toned down for Hasbro.
    • That's what I'm holding out hope for. Too true, sad, but true.
    • I have to say the Walgreen's Invisible Woman is my favorite for three reasons: 1) she was my very first Marvel Legends figure, my gateway into collecting this brand; 2) Sue is my favorite female Marvel superhero; and 3) it's a good-looking figure with cool interchangeable hands, an attractive body and head sculpt--and H.E.R.B.I.E.! Other female Marvel Legends I really like are: Spider-Gwen Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew, original costume) Black Widow (vintage wave) The Enchantress Female characters that I want Hasbro to release are: Captain Marvel II/Photon/Spectrum (classic Monica Rambeau) She-Hulk (either from the Savage or Sensational She-Hulk comics, not the new version) Magik (classic New Mutants costume with the eldritch armored arm and a reasonable-sized sword) Gamora (original appearance, green fishnet-looking costume) Satana, the Devil's Daughter (I doubt this will happen) Colleen Wing (my Misty Knight figure needs her partner) Clea (Doctor Strange's paramour) Tigra Princess Python (from the Circus of Crime, complete with giant bendy-wire snake that can wrap around her) Rogue (original green costume, hood, short hair) The Wasp is another one of my favorite Marvel women, and I have both of her comic figures, but I really would like to see another based on one of her more iconic costumes from either the '70s or '80s.
    • Carol Danvers Ms Marvel hands down. She looks like how a real woman looks (I know, I collect toys, how would I know what a real woman should look like). Her proportions are perfect to me. She is one character that Hasbro and even Toybiz seems to just knock out of the park. Loved the Toybiz’s version and the Hasbro one upped that version as well. A few others are Mockingbird (great sculpt and costume), Photon (or was she Pulsar? Beautiful face) MCU Wasp was a pleasant surprise, and i thought the Riders Black Widow was a welcome minor change to her usual offering
