Disney Abandons Spidey Over Disney-Sony Standoff And Takes Feige With Them

Looks like Sony and Spider-Man will be going forward without Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige being involved. This is over Disney and Sony Pictures not being able to come to an agreement over new terms that would have given Disney a co-financing stake in the Spider-Man Universe.

According to Deadline, Disney wanted a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony flat out said no despite Far From Home becoming their biggest box office grossing film ever just this past weekend.

It's being reported that Sony has plans for two more Spider-Man films which have director Jon Watts at the helm and star Tom Holland as the web crawler, but unless something changes, Feige will have no creative involvement in those films.

It's not clear to me from the Deadline article what this means for Spider-Man's involvement in the overall MCU going forward but if the two sides can't come together and see eye-to-eye on Money, my guess is it won't be good.

Besides Spider-Man, Sony is already well on it's way with a second Venom movie which will see Andy Serkis taking the directors chair and Morbius with Jared Leto. Other Spider themed movies that have been tossed around include Silver Sable and Black Cat and a Sinister Six movie which last reported had been shelved.

If I needed another reason not to watch Far From Home again in theatres, this was it. While I don't fault Sony for seeking a better deal for themselves, I don't think they do a good job handling Spider-Man... specially when the studio meddles with him... and it feels like it's gonna do just that.

ugh!

sony is crazy to do this.. I hope its just a big bluff to renegotiate the  deal...

The deal that just ran out Sony gave Marvel/Feige creative control over the Spider-Man movies, Sony put up all the money for the films, and Disney got a 5% first-dollar gross (5% of first day box office).  Sony is not crazy at all to decide they want to keep things they way they were and say no to a 50/50 sharing of financing and profit for Spider-Man and possibly other Spider-Man related films.

I don't think they want to distance from the MCU, but they obviously don't want to go from giving Disney a small fraction of profits to half, even if they share financing.  And with the success of Into the Spiderverse, Sony has good reason to believe they don't need Disney or ties to the MCU to have a successful Spider-Man movie.  If the next movie makes more than half what Far from Home made, they'll be right.

And Sony pocketed almost all that money.  Why would they want to suddenly not do that? From a business standpoint, it makes practically no sense.

I'd call it an investment. Let's spread it out:

Instead of spending 100% of the production and distribution costs on Marvel, I'd spend half. Still, not doing anything else than giving the money and lending my licence.
So instead of winning 99.9% of the total revenue I'd make 50%... sure, it feels like a loss.

Putting it into actual numbers from FFH for example:
Sony spent 160 mill. on the movie. The first day, the movie made $39.3 million of which 5% went to Disney. Almost 2 million. The rest is Sony's: 1.11 bil.
I don't really fault Disney for wanting a better deal, either.

Under the new scheme:
Sony would've spent 80 mil and made 555 mil doing nothing but spending the money and lending the character.

However you look at it, Sony would've won. Sony's bitching because Marvel wants a fairer cut.

Business aside, I think this will be bad for the story in universe.  Far from home was setting up Peter as the new protagonist now that Cap and Tony are gone, and this will hurt that.  Not to mention the aggressively lackluster lineup of Phase 4 isn’t doing the MCU any favors.  Without a strong lead, they need to dive head first into F4 and X teams now more than ever.  Get the first family to be that new lead if we can’t have spidey

It's not a win to go from $938 million profit to only $555 million.  In fact, it's the opposite.

It is a win when you don't do any work.

If that deal would've been in place for Far From Home, Sony would've made 700% out of paying 80 million and letting Marvel play with the kid. Sony was winning money for doing nothing.

Sure, if we look at the 800% they made in the current deal and the sheer volume it was it's less, but not a loss.

Still, I'll wait for the reviews for everything else that comes out before I spend another cent on them. Venom has me wary.

I'd wager 50% of the investment on 100% of Marvel's work before 100% on 100% of any Sony's work. One's a guarantee hit with 9 films grossing over a billion dollars, the other's a hit or miss with more misses than hits on sequels. I'd wager on the long game rather than the short one. But, hey I'm not running anyone's finances right, right?

Well, according to Sony, when reached for comment about the news, negotiations are still on going, so this could all still change.

I guess they're waiting to see how much FFH makes back in theatres to see if they're the powerhouse they think they are or if they are riding the MCU wave.

I have zero loyalty to Sony. If they don't want to play with Marvel Studios (Disney), then they can go struggle again like they did with the crappy Andrew Garfield movies. Without Marvel Studios, they never see a $1 billion movie like Far From Home again any time soon. That was all due to being tied with the Marvel Studios Avengers universe. If Venom 2 and Morbius bomb next year, maybe they'll come to their senses and just sell the rights to all of the Spidey characters back to Marvel Studios where they belong. It figures that we finally have the Fox crap behind us and now Sony is being stupid again. We just can't have nice things. I'd say that I'd boycott all Sony movies going forward over this, but in truth,  it wouldn't really matter because they don't have any other movie franchises that I would ever watch anyway. I went through the list of movies they've put out over the last decade and it's BLEAK. Maybe that's why they have to squeeze every dollar out of Spidey, LOL. Sony can suck it.

I'm almost positive now they will do a Spiderman Vs. Venom story. They will use Marvels Tom holland to promote their Tom Hardy Venom. Two studios tugging at 1 character from each side can easily spell disaster and create confusion. People still think 2 heads are better than 1?

Please no more reboots. Hopefully Sony learned something from FFH and can make a great movie being FFD (Far from Disney).

Spidey truly is Far From Home. (Period)

Welp, I won't be watching anything of Sony's Spiderman. I'm sure they'll reach an agreement down the line. Or Disney just buys Sony,,,which would save us a lot of agony seeing as they pump out the worst films in hollywood (Spiderverse being their only good thing)

I'm with you, bro.  Jumanji, The Jump Street Movies, The Equalizer movies, The Magnificent Seven, Kung Fu Hustle, Layer Cake, Black Book, Moon, Whiplash, The Raid movies, Black Hawk Down, Big Fish, Talladega Nights, Superbad, Walk Hard, Step Brothers, Zombieland, Casino Royale, Skyfall, Captain Phillips, and Django Unchained are just the #&%@ing worst.
