X-Men Teams

Hasbro has been putting in overtime to finish up some of the iconic 90s X-teams, and while that doesn't necessarily mean they plan on finishing up teams from other eras, it's at least interesting to look at their progress toward many of the major ones. Below is a (by no means exhaustive) list of iconic teams, along with Hasbro's progress so far. Bold means no figure has been announced yet. Italics means we have a workable stand-in, but not a perfect match. The list only consists of figures from the Infinite Series, which is when Hasbro largely adopted the consistent quality we now know to expect, and it features some ancillary characters I think many people would consider optional additions to their respective teams. I mostly just made this list as a discussion point about who might be coming next, what team(s) (if any) might see more focus after they wrap up 90s X-Factor and X-Force. Any other teams you think belong on this list? Characters I missed? Discuss!

I hope they shift gears toward the outback team after the 90s. It's a team that's gotten relatively little attention, and Dwight Stall has said in the past that the Reavers are a pet project of his, so those Reavers are gonna need someone to fight! To be fair, they've given a little more attention to pre-outback 80s X-Men (two-pack Cyclops, Nightcrawler, mohawk Storm), but I'd love to see Havok, Longshot, Psylocke, etc.

Kitty Pryde from Juggernaut is not astonishing costume. It's the costume from the Bendis era. The Toybiz Kitty Pryde has the Astonishing costume. That being said these are great lists!

Right, you are! They're similar costumes, so I misremembered. Fixing now!

Should Random be on the Government X-Factor list?

Maybe. I felt like the X-Factor that Random appeared in was basically a different team by that point. Wasn't he only really actively part of the Forge, Mystique, Polaris, Sabretooth, Shard, Wild Child line-up? I know he appeared in the Peter David era, but not really as part of the team, right? I guess they hired him, which isn't that dissimilar from the rest of the team's situation. Sure, I'll put him on the list.

Random would be fun. Nice list. Lists are great for imagination. I'm getting more excited about seeing some Generation X figures. That series was fun early on. I liked the uniforms.

I would hope Hasbro could include some accessories to demonstrate their powers. Maybe some extra hands or limbs for Husk. I wish they would do flight stands for someone like M. Would Skin be cool without normal and stretched out hands? Would Mondo have to be a BAF? I remember the 90's toy being somewhat large.

What would be the uniform for your ideal New Mutants figures? They had some really dated appearances around Inferno. Were those characters around the entire time?

Until your list I didn’t realize how many XMen still need to be done. Thought there had been more. Or seems like there had been more.

Makes me grateful that so many missing spots in the Avengers have been filled over the years. Still have plenty more to be done..

new-mutants-lineup.png

The original New Mutants were just Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot, and Wolfsbane, but they pretty quickly added Cypher, Magik, Magma, and Warlock, and then that line-up stuck around for a really long time. I think most people would consider it the iconic line-up, and it lasted through Claremont's time on the book and into Louise Simonson's. Simonson got rid of all the non-original recruits, though, and ultimately replaced them with Boom-Boom, Rictor, Rusty, and Skids.

I'm pretty sure Inferno featured their "graduation uniforms", which they adopted any time they thought the X-Men were dead or that they were otherwise now in charge. They were a running gag to showcase the characters' relative immaturity--costumes the characters themselves (a bunch of teenagers), but not the readers, thought were really cool. They're funny, but I (like most fans, I'd guess) would love to see them in the black and yellow above. The reunion uniform that the recent Walgreens Dani Moonstar is wearing is also great, but the above is the classic take.

Yeah, they've been working hard on a few of the 90s teams, but there's a looooot left, even just from the Claremont and early 90s eras.

I'm holding off on purchasing the Walgreens Dani Moonstar to include as my Wolfsbane in hopes of Hasbro releasing Wolfsbane in her Government X-Factor costume.

I'm only interested in this one because of the Dani and Mirage figures that may never get done otherwise. If they wanted to they could include a Magma head sculpt in some single packed character in the future. I'm sure some kind of male New Mutants uniform character will be coming out eventually, but non of the male characters were the same height. You make due where you can, I guess.

Great list @Benn. That's quite a project. I do think after AOA, the outback era is the most logical way to go. Longshot, Rogue in her Green Bustier outfit, maybe even Psylocke in her purple armor. There's a lot of good material there. Personally, I don't really see Generation X figures. Those characters, aside from Husk, were probably the worst conceptualized characters in X-History. Still if any of them do come out I'm getting them, but will lose no sleep if they don't. I forsee a Excalibur press in the near future and then I think they are just gonna go all over the place snatching looks and characters from all over the mutant spectrum.

I would love some representation from the Morlocks, but I doubt it. I'm a big fan of Sunder and the way he went out, fighting as one of the X-Men who put it all on the line to rescue the original team. I think it was said somewhere that the plan was at one time to have Guido join the Blue Team and Sunder was to join X-Factor, but they ultimately decided they looked too much alike and killed Sunder off while he was in a training uniform. There's even an old 90's trading card with random representations of the X-Men where it clearly depicts Guido, yet they list him as Sunder. It was a whole weird thing they retconed as Marvel was making their big re-branding effort to accommodate Jim Lee and his merry band and Rob Liefeld before they ultimately stabbed them in the back (not bitter at all). Long story even longer, Sunder almost made it into the team, but Lee didn't want him.

Yeah, I really hope when they do a powered-up Magma figure, it comes with a depowered head for this figure. My Wolfsbane version of the figure would immediately make the switch to Magma. Although, I did notice that (for whatever reason) Amara's version of this outfit was sleeveless. Maybe that's why they went with Rahne in the first place, but sleeved arms seem less problematic to me than "handless" (pawless?) gloves, or, you know, the fact that Rahne was busy with X-Force and X-Factor and never took part in the reunion this outfit comes from.

I think (and hope) you're right. Giant-Size is obviously the higher profile era, but that team's a bit closer to completion, and the remaining figures could more easily be peppered in to two-packs and exclusives, or used as one-shot wave anchors over the course of an era where they're otherwise "focusing" more on the outback team. And, man, I hope so on armoured Psylocke. She certainly has enough of a fan club (myself included).

I pretty much agree. I love a lot of the Generation X characters, but I feel way less strongly about them as a team, in team outfits, than I do about the New Mutants. Chamber is really high on my list, but he didn't really wear the Gen X outfit during the iconic era of the team anyway, and as long as we get him, I'm not as worried about the rest. Although, Mondo, Penance, Skin, and Synch didn't really see much action outside of that team look.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Excalibur get the Alpha Flight treatment. It was a small team during its prime. They could even rerelease Nightcrawler with more of a mullet.

I think Marrow would be cool, but it would have to be her initial look as the leader of the Morlocks. I'm not a fan of Alan Davis' "pretty" rendering. Callisto and Masque are pretty low on my hopes list. They are pretty uninteresting or downright ugly. I can't imagine a list that has them ahead of anyone else. Not to be a jerk or anything.

Yeah, I understand your position. She is an important character in X-Men lore. I just think she is boring. Hopefully we get to the point that they are dipping into the Morlocks and Callisto, though. It would mean we'd have already gotten a lot of X-Men Legends!

Imagine a Callisto with tentacled arms, from the storyline where Masque got ahold of her.

I was thinking the same thing. Aside from Marrow I suppose she is the most recognizable Morlock. They could pretty much reuse the "Punk Storm" body mold and I think they could include her "beautiful" head swap and also her tentacle arms. Wow, I forgot just how much crap she's been through. Sounds like a perfect recipe for a Walgreens exclusive, but I think it's been reported that the Cuckoos would be the last X-Men based exclusives, and it was up in the air if they would keep doing exclusives at all as the exec that oversees the exclusives is leaving the company. Still, I can't imagine they'd opt out. Sure, there are a few flops like Black Ant and Medusa, but they've done pretty well for the most part.

How do you know Medusa was a flop? Just the prevalence of shelf-warmers? I’m really surprised. I would have thought a figure of her would behave been a success.

This is the kind of thing that makes me nervous about dipping into more obscure characters. If they don’t sell well they discourage Hasbro from similar attempts in the future.

The Medusa figure was a flop for a number of reasons (imo, of course).

  1.  First and foremost, the heavy hair severely limited her poseability.  You can put her in a vanilla stance, any other kind of pose is either trickier than normal to pull off, or just plain impossible.
  2.  Unlike most WG exclusives, no accessories whatsoever.  Debatably none were needed but still. I think having some swappable components to the hair would've helped although i'll admit i don't know how feasible that is.
  3.  No BAF piece to help move it,  not surprising since its a WG exclusive but still, not helping sales.
  4.  Presumably WG was counting on the Inhumans show/IMAX movie to boost sales, but the show was terrible.
  5. Many hard-core collectors already had a medusa figure from the Thanos Imperative sdcc box set a few years back.
  6.  imo female figures are more likely to pegwarm, although its more of a tendancy than a hard and fast rule.  Yes, plenty of male figures pegwarm too.  Appropriately, black bolt falls in the pegwarmer category too, in my estimation.

All that said, i think Hasbro is still committed to making obscure characters, especially ones they can easily cobble together with re-used parts. Although i can see your point,  poor medusa sales probably did contribute to us not getting any more inhuman figures since.  I guess my advice would be to buy figures of obscure characters because you like the character on his/her own, not necessarily because you expect hasbro to complete a team/group the character is part of.... if that makes sense.  IOW i'd say buy Citizen V if you like Citizen V, not because you expect hasbro to complete the original Thunderbolts team anytime soon.

Flop is an interpretive word. Ones definition can vastly differ from another. For my part it was an excellent figure, much better than the box set exclusive. I simply judge by the fact that I can walk in any Walgreens (in my town) and find at least 3 in every store. It's even worse with FA Daredevil and (Black) Ant-Man. Yet figures like Silver Surfer, Reed Richards, Mystique, even Infamous Iron Man are nowhere to be found. I too wonder why Medusa was not quite as well recieved as others, but maybe it was ultimately the victim of over saturation, or maybe it's just the lesser appeal of characters like the Inhumans as apparent by the failure of the TV show/movie/whateverTF, but do hope we continue to see some Inhumans in maybe the Avengers or FF waves. As @bashpics99 said, maybe slipping them into a wave and including a BAF with them would ensure healthier sales.

Thanks for your comments. It's too bad when a surefire hit is a relative dud. It makes me wonder. I'm sure the love triangle three pack will do well based on how much it would cost to acquire two-thirds of that set on the aftermarket. But I wonder how much demand there is for Havok and Polaris outside of the hardcore community.

Were you into X-Men in the late nineties? I don't see any of the figures from that era in your list, excepting maybe Generation X. I only vaguely remember those years, but we had Joseph, Marrow, Cecilia Reyes, Maggot, Cannonball. I liked his X-Men look. I think we saw Angel get his feathers back, but retained his blue skin. Spiky Iceman. Nightcrawler had an interesting look in Excalibur after the end of AoA.

What about Claremont's return. Cable had an interesting look, Phoenix?
