That was probably because that's how the Fox streaming rights for theatrical releases were setup

Exactly. The producers of these movies, Dark Phoenix and New Mutants, have a deal where HBO has first dibs on streaming.

The very fact that Disney has their own streaming, yet their movie (after a run in theatres) debuts on HBO proves it.

My suspicion is: Disney would rather make money on whatever paltry Box Office $$$ either movie (DPh and NM) would make instead of cancelling the theatrical release altogether and making ZERO money out of it and having HBO benefit from new subscribers from debuting those movies first. We know Disney has no problem canceling a theatrical release if they can still debut a movie on their Disney+ streaming: Artemis Fowl.

Guys, Dark Phoenix was no masterpiece, but have you watched the other X-Men films? Sure, it was worse than Days of Future Past and Logan, but about in the same tier as Apocalypse and the Wolverine, which is to say wayyy better than all the other garbage Fox put out. It was among the better movies in a terrible franchise. I guess I'm just not sure what anyone was expecting from the studio that brought us Origins: Wolverine, First Class, and the original trilogy.

And I still would like to see or at least know what was the original ending! I also enjoyed The Wolverine, but the director's cut version.

Sure, Apocalypse looked cheap and The Wolverine was uneven (not even mentioning X-men: Origins Wolverine and X-men: The Last Stand, two of the three worst of the franchise) but Dark Phoenix committed the cardinal sin of franchise movies: BORING. I'd rather rewatch those other movies because I can at least enjoy some parts. I can't say the same for Dark Phoenix.

X2 was a gem. But yea First Class was pretty bad.

Two years since this last post and I still haven't seen this movie. Tried to watch it, really, but it just didn't hold my interest. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Dang that necro post XD. Dont bother, I did and it was a waste of time. awful. If it didnt get you when you first tried, nothing else in the movie will.

I really didn't think this was such a bad movie, it was fine, it wasn't a masterpiece but it was a fine enough product for what it was a teen oriented superhero thriller, it had some decent characters and some cool visuals, I don't think it was a bad offering, I actually thought Ana Taylor Joy was a good Magik, and Charlie Heaton did his best southern accent as Sam.

but if you couldn't get around to finishing it first try, don't go back, likely this isn't a loss to be not seen, but it really wasn't as horrendous as it could have been, seeing as how wack fox was doing X-Men. I'd say this movie looks like a academy award winner compared to X-Men Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
