Acclaimed writer Kurt Busiek’s new ongoing series, THE MARVELS, will debut this April. The previously announced series will be one of the most sprawling series ever to hit the Marvel Universe, telling stories that span the decades and range from epic adventure to intense human drama, from the street-level to the cosmic, starring literally anyone from Marvel’s very first heroes to never-before-seen superstars of tomorrow. The Marvels and Astro City writer will be joined by artist Yildiray Cinar (X-Men, Iron Man) and the series will feature iconic covers by legendary artist Alex Ross.

“The whole idea of THE MARVELS is to be able to use the whole Marvel Universe — not just all the characters in it, but all the history of it. The sweeping scope of the whole thing,” Busiek said when the book was first announced. “Big stuff can happen in the Marvel Universe, but we usually see it confined largely to the Avengers in AVENGERS, to the FF in FANTASTIC FOUR, and so on. THE MARVELS is intended as a freewheeling book that can go anywhere, do anything, use anyone. It’s a smorgasbord of Marvel heroes and history.

THE MARVELS will feature Captain America, Spider-Man, the Punisher, the Human Torch, Storm, the Black Cat, the Golden Age Vision, Aero, Iron Man and Thor, and the startling introduction of two brand-new characters. Plus: Who (or what) is KSHOOM? It all starts here. Check out never-before-seen interior artwork now and be sure to pick up this one-of-a-kind new series when it hits stands in April!

"The whole idea of THE MARVELS is to be able to use the whole Marvel Universe — not just all the characters in it, but all the history of it. The sweeping scope of the whole thing,” Busiek said when the book was first announced.

So which "history" is he talking about? How many reboots and retcons have they done because they whined that the landmark, wonderful tapestry woven by their betters for decades before them was "too complicated"? And then they had to reboot their "new" continuity, which didn't last half as long, because they couldn't keep their own "all new" sh1t straight or bring in more readers?

His idea's a great one. Not to throw a wet towel here but frankly this story and anything like it will be utterly pointless, as long as Marvel writers and editors continue to ignore their own history. Continuing the silly deaths/rebirths, writing the characters into corners, making up "universe shattering" cross over "events" and reboots that frankly, they lack the writing skills to ever fully deliver, isn't going to work.

It'll be a  typical Busiek story where he'll probably throw back to some awesome events in the classic continuity but it won't matter in the least because Marvel doesn't care about continuity or what came before anymore. Pretty much each book is it's own continuity now and doesn't matter in the wider scope of the Marvel U because continuity is hard.

This looks promising, not the greatest Alex Ross cover but it's still Alex Ross. Just might be the thing to get my comic subscription going again. I'm sure JayC will remind us when April gets near so I don't forget and miss that first issue.

I mean Immortal Hulk is one of the best stories going on right now which itself is a retcon, and is fully delivering an awesome story, but that’s just me. To be honest some stuff really needs to be retconned out of Marvel history looking at you Avengers #200, and Gwen & Norman. Sure some are bad looking at you Kree Empire fighting Starbrand Rex, and Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver not being mutants or Magnetos kids anymore, and Franklin not being a mutant anymore, and Galactic Wakandan Empire. Some are good tho: Immortal Hulk, Carol (Car-Ell) Danvers, HoX..., Venom/Knull/Symbiotes, Silk etc... I don’t remember there being a reboot, because if you’re talking about Secret Wars to ANAD there were a few characters who remember what happened: Doom, Richards, Franklin, Valeria, Sue, Black Panther, America Chavez, Singularity, among a few others, all they did was relaunch. Sure the contestant events are a bummer, but some are pretty good: Absolute Carnage which is the precursor to King in Black. There’s also a whole bunch of interesting new stuff that they’ve done: Hulkling becoming the Emperor of the Kree and Skrulls and having them be United as one, which was a played out plot of them waring with each other. Also Xandra leading the Shi’ar Empire with Deathbird and Oracle teaching her how to run it, as well as having the Kree/Skrull Alliance be allied with the Shi’ar and Krakoa. It’s also interesting the whole Krakoa being sanctuary for mutants, as the world has always tried to rid the world of mutants time and time again even though they save them from threats, so it’s a nice change. Sure the continuity could be better, but there’s awesome stuff right now

This April, one of the biggest, most sprawling series ever to hit the Marvel Universe finally arrives.

Written by Kurt Busiek with art by Yildiray Çinar, THE MARVELS #1 will kick off a fascinating new saga set in the spectacular 616 that spans decades and will range from grand adventure to intense human drama, from street-level to cosmic, and star everyone from Marvel’s very first heroes to the superstars of tomorrow. This sprawling story will play with the grand tapestry that is Marvel Comics in an exhilarating new way by diving headfirst into Marvel history to tying together unsolved mysteries, make brand-new connections between characters, and reintroduce long-dormant threats. Along the way, readers will be introduced to exciting new heroes and villains like Threadneedle, Warbird, and Kevin Schumer, and be reacquainted with new takes on classic characters such as Lady Lotus.

Here’s what Kurt told Comicbook.com in an exclusive interview about the most mysterious character of the lot—the being known as Threadneedle:

“We introduce three new characters in THE MARVELS 1 — one who’s very much on a human level, one wrapped up with superhero history and ties beyond Earth, and one who’s outright weird and cosmic and will usher us into a bigger, stranger, deeper world. Threadneedle is that third guy, as I expect you can tell. And yeah, Alex did an astounding design of Threadneedle, didn’t he? Quirky and trippy, and nothing like anyone else Marvel’s had in stories before. And that’s all very intentional. Make sure to keep an eye on him. He’s got fascinating secrets.”

Anyone. Anywhere. Any Time. Don’t miss Marvel Comics storytelling at its finest when THE MARVELS #1 hits stands on April 28th. Check out the new character designs now and head over to Marvel.com for a sneak peek at the first issue!

Retailers, don’t forget to order your copies by Monday, April 5th!
