Can you detail the “dispute”? I hadn’t heard anything about this and it got my curiosity

Dispute probably wasn't the right word; I don't think there was ever a conflict, just a question about branding. The character of Carol Danvers, more popular than ever now, is currently known as Captain Marvel. But... this is a retro-themed figure modeled after a look that Carol never wore since she's been called Captain Marvel. So do they put Ms. Marvel on the box? Will that hurt the brand association for people who know Carol as Captain Marvel if this figure doesn't have the same name and isn't wearing the same costume? Is this blond, bare-thighed Ms. Marvel a different character?

It just seemed like putting her civilian name on the card, albeit weird on its own because that's never been her popularized name like with Jean Grey or Monica Rambeau.

On the other hand, Marvel had no problems reprinting Carol's original comics under the MS. MARVEL title, and these came out in 2019, same year as her movie, intended to capitalize on the popularity of the character and the movie. So, who knows why they choose what they do?

Not sure thats the best choice of words. Most likely some marketing clown got worried that someone wouldn't know that Captain Marvel used to be Ms. Marvel, and that a new character is running around who's also Ms. Marvel, using her old name. What bothers me is, why do they think there's no problem with this woman wearing a mask, yet having her real name plastered like that. 😂

She's Warbird in the 2nd book but I'm sure that's too violent and harsh sounding in today's world. She'll always be Ms Marvel in my collection as well as Warbird. Mar' Vell is the one & only Captain Marvel. Monica is Photon.

It only makes sense to me that Marvel comics would have a character called ....Captain Marvel. Such clarity is like a welcome breeze to a fevered mind. Yet I can show respect to the original Captain Marvel, even though his own company has denied him his birthright, to be now called shazam. Folly and foolishness. Captain Mar-Vell, Captain Marvel, and Captain Marvel are all worthy of the name, even as we respect their choices to go on to other names.....adventures.....excitement. Excelsior.

Speaking of other media, it's also notable that in the Disney Junior cartoon Spidey and His Amazing Friends, which features both Peter Parker and Miles Morales versions of Spider-Man together, Miles is known as Spin.

Well it's better than Kid Arachnid

Spider Man Kid Arachnid

Bingo! Mar-Vell was the original Captain Marvel and coincidentally the more popular one. Carol Danvers, who had similar powers and background with the Kree became Ms. Marvel. Both characters existed along side each other and fought together and coexisted with no problems whatsoever. While Captain Marvel was out having more cosmic crusades Ms. Marvel was the more Earth based protector, as Earth was actually her home planet. I would venture to say she was more popular then than she is now, though I guess not popular enough not to be killed off by Rogue. After about 8 cancelled runs and the current run consistently failing to break Marvel's top 30 titles (unless, of course, it guest stars the original Captain Marvel to boost sales), it still strikes me as funny when so many people keep insisting she's "more popular than ever". I guess on a scale from 1 to 10 a 2.5 still ranks better than a 2.

Fast forward to today. Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel, the new face of Marvel, and it's disrespectful to ever acknowledge that she was ever a mere Ms. Marvel, yet it's not disrespectful to never again acknowledge that Mar-Vell was the original Captain Marvel.

Yet they printed modern Carol Ms.Marvel era comics as Captain Marvel (Ms. Marvel years).  So It's very weird situation when even Marvel doesn't know what to do.

I think that whole alcoholic thing was just lifted from Stark in a clumsy attempt by her writers to "humanize" her or make her "more relatable".  I just couldn't see how her biochemistry could work in a way where she could become an alcoholic. Just like when the Fantastic Four wore jackets for awhile and they put the Torch in one- WHILE HE WAS FLAMED ON. Why, WHY would a being who can generate enough heat to melt a battleship into slag, need a jacket?!

Nympho? what...

In Busiek run, before the Kang saga they speak about the emotional sequels of being abused by Marcus in the 70's, she wanted to feel the physical thing but not emotional ... at some point she was even interested in Vision for that.

It was the 90s, big jackets on top of form fitting outfits and pouches. Lots of pouches.

Typical 90s. Pouches just a metaphor for Looks that Go Nowhere and Do Nothing. A few artists were really able to pull it off, but most weren't, and the imitators....gahhh....they were just the worst....
