Sydney Sweeney To Co-Star Opposite Dakota Johnson In Sony's Marvel 'Madame Web'

Deadline is reporting that Sydney Sweeney has signed on to join Dakota Johnson in Sony Pictures’ Madame Web.  It is unknown who Sweeney will be playing in the film.

In the comics, Madame Web is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and thus was connected to a life-support system that looked like a spider web. Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web never actively fought any villains. For that reason, sources have stressed it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders say due to her psychic sensory powers, she is essentially Sony’s version of Doctor Strange.

The film is being directed by S.J. Clarkson from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.  Kerem Sanga penned a previous draft.

Sweeney is credited with HBO’s The White Lotus and Euphoria, The Voyeurs for Amazon, and Blumhouse’s Nocturne.

Why are we casting a child in this role?
I was expecting a Helen Mirren type. Someone with some years and some gravitas under their belt.

(I will fully admit to only knowing Madame Webb from the 90's animated series, so perhaps that depiction was inaccurate?)

Dakota Johnson is Madame Web. It could be she is the Julia Carpenter version.

Sydney Sweeney has another role.

My guess is she is the Gwen Stacey Spidergirl

I totally misread the article. This makes more sense!

I doubt they gonna let actress of Euphoria fame be Spider-Gwen who is presented by Marvel as female hero/role model for all ages, mainly because unlike Zendaya Sydney Sweeney is very often nude and in sex scenes in the series. I would assume she's  could be playing either Mattie Franklin the third Spider-Woman or more likely Charlotte Web the Evil Spider-Woman.

Sydney Sweeney spoke with Variety about the success of HBO’s Euphoria, and the discussion turned to her upcoming Marvel movie, with Sweeney confirming that she will take on the role of Julia Carpenter — aka Spider-Woman — opposite Dakota Johnson in the title role of Madame Web.

Quote

“I was freaking out, of course,” Sweeney recalls when she learned she was booked for the part. “I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”

Sweeney is really hoping that Madame Web will break through and be different from what people have seen before.

Quote

“I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be,”  she told sources.  “Quote that! That’s a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about.”

When asked if her character will have an expanded role in the MCU, Sweeney gave a coy yes, and when asked about a potential stand-alone Spider-Woman movie, Sweeney smiled and shrug knowingly.

I'm astonished that they're bringing Julia Carpenter to the big screen. She's one of my all-time favorite characters, and she's been largely ignored in the comics since the mid-90's. Maybe for once, movie synergy will actually work in my favor, and they'll give her a more substantial role in the comics? I'd love to see her go back to being Arachne. Frankly, her role as Madame Web sucks, and it's been a complete waste of her character. She gets a premonition. It gives her a headache. The premonition ends up not coming true because Peter steps in to prevent it. Rinse and repeat. It's time to change the damn record, already. I'd kill to see her back as an Avenger, or even a Force Works revival (I know, probably not a chance in hell of either one ever happening).

Ugh. I really want to be excited about this movie but I really have this bad feeling about anything Spidey related that isn't actually Spidey at this point but I must say I love the costumes designs. I've never understood why Dakota Johnson was ever famous other than she's Don Johnson's daughter but beyond that I must say this doesn't look horrible. Hopefully all the best parts are not just the parts we see in this trailer. From the looks I'm guessing Madame Web in her older age is going to somehow project herself back into her younger body in the past and try and try over again to right wrongs of the past. X-Men: Days of Future Past style.

whoa back up sony, that was dookie, why does that movie feel like it was made in 2001? and at the same time, feels like it was made for the Showcase channel?, I don't think I could be less thrilled about a comic movie...like ever, this looks awful, bad acting, bad action, it felt so flat I couldn't believe it, it doesn't even seem to have a story, watching 3 minutes of this probably was enough, I could barely hang on, that was bad. Ugh Dakota Johnson can't even try to pretend shes' not made out of cardboard and paper mache.

Go away Sony, nobody wants to play with you.

I'm someone who admittedly will watch pretty much any and all Marvel live-action stuff --- and I'd certainly watch this, but with that being said... Disney, please buy out Sony on the Spider-Man film license already, please!!!

Also, Sony is watching in real time how the much better ran Disney MCU is struggling with a movie featuring 3 female leads, do they really think they have any shot of doing better with this???

I really enjoyed the Marvels, by the way. I have no issue with female led movies whatsoever --- but there is a very loud vocal contingent on the internet that clearly does have a problem with it. I personally don't ever want to hear the terms "M-She-U" or "Get Woke, Go Broke" ever again, but there's certainly a vocal contingent online spreading that garbage.

I'll root for this, but have very low expectations. I fully expect Kraven to do worse than Morbius did, and I expect Madame Web to do worse than either of them --- regardless of whether any of those movies actually end up being any good or not. Maybe it will be enough to convince Sony to abandon their expanded Spidey film franchise. Unfortunately the success of the animated Spiderverse movies has only hardened their stance on keeping the film license at any cost. (Those movies are fine, but I'm just not into animation).

Agreed. I've always thought an easy fix would be for Sony to just do Miles and his versions of the villains and side characters, and let MCU be Peter. Then just collect the money. We could get a huge crossover movie every once in a while and bam...everyone wins.

I think a female cast and lead is totally plausible if done right. Back when they did movies like Alien, Resident Evil and Underworld there was not even a question about it. Those gals were BA and to ever imagine those movies without them is impossible IMO. Even movies like Fifth Element and Terminator. But back then they just made a good movie with a lead that happens to be female. Now days it's like they have to lean way into the Girl Power element and remind you constantly and the biggest part of the story is about the struggle. Almost like they expect people to be mad that the lead is a female. No that's not the case. Make the movie right and about the right thing and people will watch.

I will enjoy watching this on Prime. Honestly looks better then the Kraven movie but there's no way they'll get me into the theatre to see it. Not really big on Dakota Johnson anyhow.
