Yahya Abdul-Mateen II To Lead Marvel Series Wonder Man For Disney+

Deadline is reporting that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has jumped from DC to Marvel and will play the lead for the studio’s Disney+ series, Wonder Man.

The series was first announced in development back in June, with Destin Daniel Cretton and Co-producer Andrew Guest announcing their involvement. Cretton will direct and executive produce, with Guest serving as head writer.

The Wonder Man character was created by writer Stan Lee and artists Don Heck, Jack Kirby, and was introduced to Marvel Comics in 1964 in The Avengers #9.  The son of the industrialist Sanford Williams, Simon Williams assumes control of his munitions outfit following his passing, seeing its successes limited when it comes into competition with Tony Stark’s Stark Industries. The younger Williams gains ion-based superpowers, including super strength, while working under the villainous Baron Zemo and establishing himself as an antagonist to The Avengers, though he later decides to become part of that superhero team.

Abdul-Mateen is credited for his work on HBO's Watchmen, winning his first Emmy in 2020 for his turn as Cal Abar/Dr. Manhattan in the show based on the DC Comic.  The actor is movie credited with 2018’s Aquaman, in which he'll reprise his role as David Kane aka Black Manta in the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is slated for release on December 25th, 2023.

I did not see this coming (I doubt anybody did), but I honestly kinda like it. Yeah, its a black guy, everybody's gonna have an opinion on that whether they voice it or not, but you gotta admit, there's nothing inherently strictly white about this character's story. I love the character, so as long as they capture the essence of what he's about, then that aspect will only allow for some more interesting angles. Especially if they do the story where he becomes an actor.

Can we just not do this? Can't we just have a movie, with a legit movie crew? Eternals got a freaking movie, why not Wonder Man? This could be Marvel's Black Adam. People knew of him, but no one really knew about him until they did a movie. And yes, it was good. Can this Disney+ and garbage formula and can these no-name, no-experience writers and directors. What's gonna happen is this is gonna end up just like Moon Knight. Another Superhero show about everything else other than Superheroing. Just you watch. The writer will not study the source material and just end up self-injecting themselves into the story. They'll change his powers and how he got them and they'll turn him into some whiny, agro ne'er do well that no one who is familiar with the character will recognize. Watch and see.
