Cause there is a market for it. Look at other companies and you will see they are doing it too. Hasbro wasn't the first to do it. They are just jumping on the wagon for it.

Speaking as someone who grew up on the X-Men The Animated Series cartoons, there's something appealing about having a shelf dedicated to it. Besides I've already got all those "Jim Lee" characters in their normal looks. It's just another way to own those characters again.

Yea I wish they committed to it. IMO it looks best on the Storm (if only they improved the quality of the cape).

As an animator, I don't think they really did the shading on the cartoons very well at all.  Large swathes of black shadow ( or colour) that don't always conform to the contours of the anatomy end up looking pretty ugly.
And then transposing that to the figures..........well, I don't think it's a good mix. I'm not a fan.
