Captain Marvel Dons A New Costume

This past week fans saw the end of Kelly Thompson’s historic run of CAPTAIN MARVEL, but you can’t keep Carol Danvers down for long! This October, enter an all-new era of CAPTAIN MARVEL as writer Alyssa Wong and Marvel’s Stormbreaker artist Jan Bazaldua take the reins in a new ongoing series!

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 will mark a revolutionary shift for the iconic cosmic hero as she gets a glow-up courtesy of superstar artist Jen Bartel! Bartel’s recent Hellfire Gala design for Carol was a hit with fans, and now she’s delivered a sleeker, modified version for Carol’s new journey. In addition, CAPTAIN MARVEL will see the rise of a new overwhelming omniversal entity who recognizes Carol is the only hero who can stand against its’ vision of total annihilation. After being ambushed and trapped, Carol will need to rely on the reluctant help of a young ally who holds the key to victory! She looks like she should be laying siege to the Alamo.  And here I thought the character couldn’t get more unappealing.

It's just an uglier version of what she was already wearing. And that jacket is going to be too restrictive for battle. I really wish she would go back to her traditional black costume with the lightning bolt. That's the Carol I grew up with.

The designer either has a thing for the Colonial era, Drum Leaders or 80s pop band attire. Whatever the case it looks a bit silly. Then again, I admit that one piece bathing suit outfits still make perfect sense to me, so what do I know? Lol.

Just like scarves, sashes, high heels or other design elements that Carol has worn in previous costumes. So she's just keeping up the tradition.

That being said, the jacket isn't even buttoned and it only covers her upper arms and upper torso. I don't see it being that restrictive.

Because one day I’ll leave you. A phantom to lead you in the summer, to join the black parade.”

There's a hint of a callback to the original Captain Marvel (ORIGINAL CM, now called shazam...red and yellow suit, off the shoulder cape) but this takes it into majorette drum/dance territory. The bolero-shrug idea is good, but in this particular pattern, doesn't really look like something a woman her age would wear. They'd be better off sticking with the outfit (but not the mohawk mask) from 2012; it's a clever tip to what Mar-Vell wore, and it still has her scarf from the 70s debut, this time in form of a belt sash.

Lol. This is what happens when you start hiring fashion designers as comic artists. Not that it isn't stylish or she couldn't work it walking down the street or on a night out on the town but as suit for someone who needs as little physical restrictions as possible to fight this is totally impractical. Take it from a person who knows how much trying to be cute hurts. This doesn't work. There's a reason gymnasts and track & field athletes wear as little as acceptable and they use materials as thin and breathable as possible. I understand the intention of head to toe coverage in comics these days but it completely unrealistic. Inevitably someone will point to the Gi in martial arts but that is a part of tactics and technique as much as skill. It can be used against you as much as in your favor. Bruce Lee stripped of his clothing as soon as possible or wore a skin tight track suit for a reason. That and the fact that he was totally ripped. As a former gymnast and collegiate Judo Player and current Bootie Boot Camp instructor I feel I'm somewhat qualified to speak on this. Bring back the leotard.

Like most everybody else, I'm not a fan of this look. I'd really like to see them take her back closer to her original costume as Ms. Marvel. I'll also always have fond memories of the black Warbird costume but it seems unlikely they'll ever revert back to that.

But I get the criticisms, imagine if a male superhero wore something as ridiculous and impractical as a jacket. An item of clothing specifically designed so it can never be removed

I can kinda understand people not fond of the overall aesthetic of the costume, but the opposition to there being a jacket at all is deeply confusing.  So many other superheroes, especially those with very physical fighting styles, have worn jackets, and yet this is the first time people say it's impractical?

I see no reason Carol couldn't wear the 'bolt suit and still be called Captain Marvel. IMO that suit was Carol's best by far. It was practical, scarf not withstanding, and was equal parts badass and sex appeal without ever becoming a Marvel 90s Swimsuit cheesiness.

I'm not a fan of this suit but she does check some boxes: she looks like what a super hero should look, she is instantly recognizable as CM, she would fit right in on any 90s Marvel team where jackets were required haha. 

My favs in order are 

Black with 'bolt Ms. Marvel/ Warbird. Sleek and classy

Original mid riff baring red suit perfect 70s era design, only needs gold fish in her heels to really feel the era.

Her orginal CM suit. Honestly loved that design. It was a brilliant homage of Mar Vell"s suit updated for a new character taking overhead mantle. 

I still love both Toybiz and Hasbro’s Legends figure of the 'bolt suit, this will always be what i think of when I think of Ms. Marvel / Carol Danvers

Nothing because it's imaginary. And as an imaginary scenario cannot be proven I can only speak on the real world practicality that the imaginary one should be based apon. Basically the closest we can get to a flying superhero is competitive combat and competitive sports. I was just adding a little bit more to the conversation than the typical IT'S UGLY comments that has already been established many times over by now. But they were also very true as well.

The torso of that costume would be a PITA to draw over and over---like Firestorm's costume or..............perish forbid, Jack of Hearts ( though not AS bad).
But if the artist can maintain the details, I think it looks okay for a contemporary costume.

I think the issue is about whether you approach costumes from a functional or aesthetic starting point. Because you're giving consideration to how it would actually feel to wear and move in whereas I'm just like baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn-baaaahn.

LOL. Truth be told I guess you, I and pretty much anyone else on this board are about as qualified to speak on what superheroes wear to fight aliens in space as any fashion designer turned comic artist and all we would all have different opinions on the details. But can we at least all come together and agree it is pretty darn UGLY? And honestly as I think @TheArrow points out it was easy for Jen Bartel to tap into her talent and design the darn thing but any poor artist who gets tasked with the book is going to have an aneurysm trying to illustrate that crazy thing from panel to page in each issue. And we all know these days a new comic run always comes with some new fantastic powers so I wonder if her new power will be a Cosmic Trombone.

The design can easily be broken up in simpler shapes. Most details are angled lines, which makes it even easier to reproduce. And even then, not every panel needs to have the same level of detail.

Plus, if you take away the jacket, her costume is even simpler than her current one, which has a lot more seam lines and panelling. The jacket being the way it is even makes it easier to draw, since there's a lot less wrinkles to convey than, say, a bomber jacket.

Jan Bazaldua can easily handle it, plus it's not like she's being tasked to draw an Iron Man armor. Now those can get complex.

True. The artists of today have a lot more tools at their disposal to deal with smaller details and if they get in a pinch the jacket can always removed or destroyed at anytime. Maybe they can make it a running joke that her jacket gets destroyed all the time during a fight. Maybe they can give her some impressive guns underneath. Losing the jacket is a theme all in itself.
