A new X-Men97 promotion clip titled "War" appears to tease an appearance by Captain America. For those not familiar Cap appeared in the 5th season of the original X-Men animated series in a World War II flashback episode where Logan and Cap take on the Red Skull.

Okay, here's what I want: Avengers '98. Same animation as we have here, but with a series based on the Busiek/Perez Avengers run. I want the same costumes as we got during that run. I wanna see a lineup consisting of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Wonder Man, and Ms. Marvel (the REAL one). They could absolutely do it, if they wanted to. And the ratings would probably go through the roof. They could top Avengers: EMH, if they made the effort.

Who should be on the Avengers 97 team? Should they stick with those who were on the team in the comics during that time period, should they go with the original team, mimic the MCU or come up with a completely new and unique team?

I wouldn't be surprised if they started with the members of Force Works and then tweaked it from there

I wonder if they will explain how Cap got out of the Vortex with the Red Skull

That was Spider-Man TAS and I don't think that is really considered cannon  for X-Men 97. At least I hope not cause that Secret Wars story in SM was horrible.

If X-Men '97 is a sequel to the original series,  then STAS is canon, since it's the same universe

There was nothing that ever said they were the same universe. Yes the X-Men using the same voice actors appeared in several episodes of Spider-Man but there was nothing that suggested the two shows where part of the same Universe. There wasn't any kind of story crossovers or such. Things that happened in one series didnt effect the other. Back then they may have played with the idea and had them loosely connected but I don't think Spider-Man is cannon to the events in X-Men then or now. So the only time we actually saw Cap in the original X-Men series was in the one flashback episode with Logan during WWII where Logan and Cap defeated Red Skull.

Well, they have the same Earth Number, so they are supposed to. I'm pretty sure using the same characters and designs was their way back then to say it was the same reality.  Things that happen in one comic series don't affect the other either. I don't remember anyone being affected Morgan Le Fay warping all of reality to become medieval or the AOA affecting the other books at the time

LOL, I think your stretching, but even if you want to consider them the same Universe I dont think it would be difficult to assume Cap eventually made it back to Earth.

He's not stretching or reaching. Marvel considers X-Men the Animated Series and Spider-Man the Animated Series the same universe, Earth 92131. It was intended as such at the time.

Cap return can be explained easily if they really want. But from all 90s Marvel animated Crossovers it always seemed Spidey and X-men were the most connected ones. Even 90s DCAU had fair share of plot holes that made it hard to connect but it was still the same universe due to effort to unite it into same narrative and it's still popular in part due to this, and with Disney knowing that MCU was successful due to connectivity I don't think they will miss out on opportunity to have another connected MAU even if there will be inconsistencies and plot holes.
