2024 SDCC MCU Hall H Panel News - Robert Downey Jr. And The The Russo Brothers Return To The MCU With Avengers: Doomsday

It was announced at today's SDCC Hall H Marvel Studios panel that Giancarlo Esposito will be playing the character Sidewinder in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie. In the comics Sidewinder organized the group of snake themed villains known as the Serpent Society.

It was also announced that things have changed with the next two Avengers movies. The next movie coming out in May 2026 will be titled Avengers: Doomsday which apparently will see Robert Downey Jr. return to the MCU but not as Iron Man. This time he will be playing the character of Dr. Doom.

Avengers: Secret Wars will come out in May 2027. The Russo Brothers are also coming back to direct these movies.

So Espisito is in the Serpent Society and they can't even put him in a snakeskin jacket? I'm honestly fn sick of it. Put characters in their costumes or don't use them. Here Giancarlo was stating that no one had guessed who he was playing. How the Hell were we supposed to guess that "generic guy with some guns" was a supervillain with a snake motif?  So they just vindicated all the fans telling them putting Wolvie in his actual costume would work. Then they neglected to pay attention to the lesson they were supposed to learn. Even if they introduce him and at the end he goes to a mad scientist to get powers, it's still just a waste of time. Tired of spending an entire movie explaining why someone in a Superhero movie would wear a costume. Especially now that they're only doing a few a year.

I'm sure it will be explained, but not a fan of RDJ being back as another character.

RDJ as Dr. Doom sounds like an April Fools joke. I had to check my calendar to ensure it wasn't April 1st. If I had a nickel for every time an actor who played an Avenger returned to the MCU in a Fantastic Four role. I would have 2 nickels, which isn't much. But, weirdly, it happened twice. Wow, RDJ is pulling a reverse Infamous Iron Man.

I can kinda understand if it's roughly along the same lines as John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic in Multiverse of Madness ("get the dumb fan-pleasing casting out of the way for a multiverse thing before we cast someone else more fitting for the real deal").  Still stupid, but kinda understandable.  Unfortunately, I'm not expecting that to be the case here.

Sorry but this seems like a real sad moment for the MCU, I hate it, hate it, Robert Downey is Dr. Doom? this is where it ends here, MCU good times, now it's a shell, trying to re-hash, re-live, NO NO robert Downey cannot be Dr. Doom, he made the MCU as Iron Man, and was the staple of the MCU for 15+ years, NO.

This is just desperate. Either it's the real Doom and they picked RDJ to get attention because they've been struggling, or it's a multiverseal variant of Stark

Yeah, i would've preferred it if he was revealed in the movie. Can you imagine the theater reaction of Doom unmasking and its RDJ?!

But, I guess that might be too much of a secret to keep..

It would have been spoiled way before the movie was shown. Also they need to hype the MCU as much as possible

Hope RJD is prepared to only show his face at the very end of Secret Wars.....but there's no way that's happening. 20 second into him onscreen, the mask will come off and I will be livid.

I'm still not sure if I believe RDJ will be Doom or if this is some sort of fake-out. If anything I suppose it will likely be some multiverse shenanigans where we briefly see what could have happened with Stark if his life had taken a different path, but if he's actually Victor Von Doom of the main MCUniverse that's beyond strange. 

Guess time will tell what's true and what's not, I guess, but I don't fully buy it

Good grief, the negativity in these comments. It is what it is, and, frankly, I'm intrigued. It might be great. It might stink. But good grief, the assumptions, negative knee-jerk reactions, etc. My son's reaction was probably the best: "What?! How?!" and then left it at that, to see what they're going to put on the screen and decide THEN if this is a good thing or bad thing.

Well, they haven't exactly paid off the benefit of the doubt on villains. 

But yeah, RDJ is a great actor of course. I hope he's actually playing Victor and not some weird Tony variant that becomes Doom from a one off alt reality. (I know it was done at some point) I'm just worried about MCUs penchant for immediately taking helmets off; see Ghost (a character whose face and name were never revealed...until the first minute of being on film) or Zemo, or many other examples. Doom is THE character that they need to uphold the mystery. Hopefully RDJ realizes this. Maybe the fact that people think of him as Tony will work in my favor here.

I do find it funny, in general, at how weirded out people are by multiple actors playing one character, and actors playing multiple characters. They are doing a job after all.

The negativity is warranted. This isn't an idea most fans want to see. Its that simple. And given any number of excellent actors out there (Mads Mikkelsen for one), going to Downey smells of desperation. 

Will it ultimately work? Who knows, maybe it could. But these film projects are multi-million dollar endeavors; before one risks that, one should have the best possible ingredients in place.  Academy award not withstanding, I just don't see him pulling off DOOM. Most of us didn't have to wait till it was onscreen to know that the Eternals was not going to be a good idea.

I was really hoping for someone like Mads, he was high on my list and would have made a great doom IMO, but Sadly he was wasted on Kaecilius therefore he's gotta be out, although he's one of the few actors I'd probably wave off my hate of multi casting for, I would have loved someone like Viggo Mortenson, Cillian Murphy, Cristoph Waltz, Micheal Fassbender, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, I had hopes they'd cast someone new and interesting not dip into their bag and grab out Iron Man...sheesh like bugs me to no end, I don't care at this point if it's an amazing performance I love the MCU for it's long going continuity and one thing stands for me is that every character exists in this universe and to have someone play 2-3 whatever characters wrecks the standing, I was mad when they casted Mahershala Ali as Blade, he's Cottonmouth...

It's just a desperate attempt to bring back the glory days with RDJ that's all I see, it's not a he's best for the role, it's can be go back...make people feel the way they did in 2008...and No you can't. It's not like he's Gemma Chan...yeah she can be a Kree in blue face paint...and then Sersi...nobody noticed...but Iron Man is Doom...Ugh, Also I'm sure it's going to be some Variant of Tony and I hate that as well, just give us DOOM!

The official title was announced as The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the cast members of the Fantastic Four will appear in the upcoming two Avengers movies.
