Iron Man, Spider-Woman, Firestar, War Machine And Ultron (?!) Assemble As The New West Coast Avengers

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, the WEST COAST AVENGERS are back this November in a new ongoing series by Marvel superstar Gerry Duggan and acclaimed artist Danny Kim! Today, fans can check out this bold new lineup in variant covers for the debut issue, including pieces by Jeehyung Lee, Gerardo Sandoval, and series artist Danny Kim.

This iconic iteration of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will hit the ground running just in time for the title’s 40th anniversary. Following Duggan’s run on Invincible Iron Man, the series opens with Tony Stark assembling a new team consisting of War Machine; Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman; Firestar, who Duggan redefined in the pages of X-Men; AND a mysteriously redeemed Ultron!

ULTRON RETURNS…REDEEMED? Iron Man and War Machine have put together a new team of Avengers – one that includes villains seeking a path to redemption. Their case study? Ultron – who, against all odds, seems to be walking the straight and narrow…for now. But does the success of one guarantee the success of all? Spider-Woman and Firestar have their doubts. And can any amount of heroics really absolve Ultron of his past?

“Redemption has been on my mind this year, and we'll see who can be redeemed on the West Coast,” Duggan teased. “It's a fun action story, but it's also an Ultron tale - and one of my biggest Marvel swings yet. I previously had the pleasure of writing a pretty great horror story about Ultron wearing Pym's face, and this is a very different tale with one of my favorite Marvel characters, in one of my favorite legacy titles in the city that has been my home for so long. Wait until you see what Danny Kim is cooking up. Find redemption in November in the city of Angels.”

I am sooooo excited for this. Especially that it's listed as ongoing, not a limited series. Plus I actually liked the end of Avengers Inc where  it was revealed Hank put Ultron on a path of redemption. Some of the best Avengers are former villains, so I have zero problem with this and actually think it'll be cool.

I'm still elated from this series announcement last month. I loved Gerry Duggan's Iron Man run and my biggest gripe with it is that he ended it so soon, so getting more of Duggan writing Tony (and Rhodey!) in a sort of spiritual sequel while still having a separate Iron Man run in the horizon is beyond thrilling. Keeping my cake and eating it too.

The lead-up to this announcement was also a bit of a rollercoaster. First, there was no official announcement of Duggan's run ending despite him mentioning it off-handedly in his Substack. Then there were no news on the solicitations for August and September. Although Duggan's final two issues were being used to set up this West Coast Avengers revival, there were still no news. And although Spencer Ackerman's Iron Man run was eventually announced for October, there was no indication that the WCA plot thread was being followed up on. So it was a very suspenseful ordeal lol

Wow there sure is a lot of heavy metal on this crew. Otherwise it's a pretty solid line up. Still think Firestar's new costume is horrendous. At it's heart is suspect it's meant to be more of an Iron Man book than anything but in the hands of one of Marvel's more competent writers it might not be half bad.

If they're going to do this, why can't they include the likes of Julia Carpenter, U.S.Agent, Wonder Man, Century, Mockingbird, etc.? If you're gonna have the West Coast Avengers...then use the actual West Coast Avengers. They leave all of these great characters on the sidelines. It's ridiculous.

I wish they'd stop with the whole "Ultron, can he be good?  Can he be trusted?" thing.  If you want to make a good Ultron, make him good and be done with it.  Quit jerking our chain and just commit to it, because we all know there's a 99% chance the run will wind up being he'll be good for a handful of arcs and then, oh no, he was evil the whole time and had a nefarious master plan all along!  It's more than a little tiresome, to me at least.

Ok I DID say that Fire Star was a boring knock-off....but this artwork is anything but! Wow!

Only thing is I notice her symbol looks like a star fish....I can just hear her teammates calling her "Fire Starfish"!

This new outfit is actually such an improvement over the previous new outfit which was yuck and sucked.

at least they remedied that.
