Ooof! 40 bucks for the MTG figures? I figured 30, and that was high enough. Manwolf is gonna have to get gotten, but man those accessories aren't quite enough for that price. Are these cards really 10 bucks apiece?  I actually really want the Battle Damaged Spidey for every fight with every villain set up I can ever imagine. Part of what I love about Spidey is him always getting his butt handed to him. I'm getting the Ramen Sewer diorama and was really wanting him in there fighting the Lizard or Vermin, if they ever get around to him. But at 40, it feels like the Maximum Spidey all over again. 2 accessories and a card I could care less about?

Nothing for me this time around. I was hoping Secret Wars Wave 2 might be shown off. And even though it's a bit out of left field, I was also hoping they might continue with the deluxe Sony figures and bust out a retooled Raimi Green Goblin - JUST based on the fact that the Raimi films are coming back to theaters this fall and I figured a new release could have coincided with that. Was also quietly hoping Ultimates 2023 might have finally been shown off. eh.

Re: Cyclops & Jean Grey

I really like that new Jean Grey. Looks better than the last one. I just wonder if it's nothing more than a repaint. This is a total wait and see.

I just listened to the post Youtube summary video they did and they explained that yes the claws are "strapped on" claws.

That's what it looked like they were going for. Not sure if that's comic-accurate or if it's inspired by other media such as the cartoons

OMG, Some amazing things....! Some of these reveals literally had me screaming with joy! I was at work when this info dropped so I was middle of work at a down point and looked at Instagram and....Wooo.

anyways here's my take aways (thanks Tarot for the templet)

  • MTG set
    • Agent Anti-Venom - Super Duper easy pass, while it's a great update much like the figure it's a re-paint of, I don't need to update this.
    • MJ Iron Spider - Love this and of course it's a get.
    • Man-Wolf- OMG Man-Wolf!!!! and it's gorgeous, I mean I thought it was going to be Werewolf By night, but this is almost even better, what an amazing figure! I must have.
    • Battle Damage Spidey - So easy to pass on, nope nope noper
  • X-men 97 - All Passes here for me, I don't do animated, and I have all of these characters...I'm good.
    • Wave 3
      • Morph - The only one I thought about getting, but in the end the more I looked at it, the more I feel like it's to stylized and it's a no
      • Emma Frost - Pass
      • Sunspot - Pass
      • Jubilee - Pass
      • Wolverine - Pass
      • Cable - Pass
    • 2-pack
      • Basketball Rogue and Gambit - Pass
      • Storm and Wolverine - Pass
      • Cyclops and Marvel Girl - Pass
  • The randoms
    • Outback Storm - Yeah I probably will get this, for 2 reasons, A new Storm costume, and ladies of marvel shelf
    • Emperor Doom - A Pass, I kinda like it, but I see no reason to get it
    • Starfox and Champion - OMG Yessss, 2 new characters, 2 long awaited ones, Star Fox...well Um I'm so excited about this
    • WWII Wolverine - Passsssss
    • Warbow - AMAZING, Warbow, like seriously sometimes You gotta love Hasbro...Like we are getting more Crystar characters, I'm so happy!
    • Feral!!! - OMG Beautiful finalllly, must have
    • Rachel Grey - Amazing, finally a must must
  • Mephisto - Obviously I will need to have this, I love it, thank you finally Mephisto, I will be going for this, despite the fact I could care less about a throne, but I need Mephisto.

Excalibur Rachel Summers: Instant buy. So happy to finally see her! And she has flame-wings! I’ve been hoping and advocating for those for years! And the extra head with tattoos. I’m so thrilled!

My only nitpicks: her hair looks more brown than red. And not fond of the two-tone wings. I would prefer they were all yellow or orange. Hopefully this is just due to it being a photo of a render on a screen.

Curious why they are calling her Dark Phoenix? I don’t remember Rachel ever being called that, even when she wore the actual Dark Phoenix costume.

Already hoping for a deluxe/maximum release with a mullet head and another head with flaming hair, plus bigger, fuller flame wings.

Anyway: very happy!

Feral: instant buy. 90s X-Force is complete!

I wonder why aren’t they using the furry Wolfsbane sculpt? I would have thought reusing that for Feral (and Hepzibah) was a major incentive to make those new parts for Wolfsbane.

Outback Storm: Skipping because they gave her the wrong hair. That ruins it for me. It doesn’t make sense to reuse an old, inaccurate hair sculpt when most people likely associate the wild v-shaped hair with this costume. I’ll wait for a proper version.

‘97 Roberto: skipping because I want Sunspot with alternate Roberto parts. They got it right with the New Mutants costume, but I wish he had an alternate head with powers activated, and more unique effects rather than the mostly-generic fireballs. Again, I’ll wait and hope for a better version.

‘97 Emma Frost: Maybe, due to the improved joints.  The Hellfire version is so gummy it’s unable to stand. Wish she had some telepathic effects. I’d love to see the psychic javelin from Pryde of the X-Men

Undecided:

Cyclops and Marvel Girl look great. Except Cyclops needs brighter red in the visor on the neutral face. At first glance I thought it was empty. This pack out of heads and various optic blast effects should be standard for Cyke.

Jean still needs new, better telepathic/telekinetic effects. And the green of her costume seems like it should be brighter.

Basketball Rogue is cool. Love the new head/hair. I appreciate these casual versions, but I don’t need them.

Very glad to see Jubilee gets new energy effects.

Morph looks good. Glad for the alternate heads.

My opinions

  • MTG set
    • Agent Anti-Venom -  I don’t have one, but not pushed
    • MJ Iron Spider – Definitely, Love the look
    • Man-Wolf- Interesting but Pass
    • Battle Damage Spidey -  Never interested in Battle Damage figures
  • X-men 97 - Wave 3
      • Morph – Not sure about Double Dipping
      • Emma Frost -  Probably Pass, have the Hellfire version
      • Sunspot - Possible
      • Jubilee – Don’t have leather Jubes, so maybe
      • Logan – Easy pass
      • Cable -  I got the Zabu wave version so I’m good
    • 2-pack
      • Basketball Rogue and Gambit – Looks fun but passing
      • Storm and Wolverine - Pass
      • Cyclops and Marvel Girl - Pass
  • The randoms
    • Outback Storm - Pass
    • Emperor Doom -  Pass
    • Starfox and Champion – Starfox would be okay, don’t care for Champion
    • WWII Wolverine – Pass, not even correct
    • Warbow – I passed on Crsytar, so he’s getting passed as well
    • Feral! - Pass
    • Rachel Grey – Looks really good and can’t say no to Rachel
  • Mephisto -  Pass, not supporting a MTO of character I hate

40 for the MTG set?!! I know MTG can be expensive, and they seem to indicate that these cards are exclusive to these set but my god. No wonder they are only doing four (for now) and are separating them.

Anyone here know Magic fans enough to guess if we'll be seeing these figures on ebay without the card for cheaper? At least Man Wolf? Would gambling on that be crazy? Idk, but I do know how high that character is on my personal list, so...I'm torn.

I have recently got back into Magic with Final Fantasy. It's really hard to say at this point. The reason being is that these are a scalpers wet dream as it were. Not only are figures scalped. But the Cards too. So I can see scalpers looking to take advantage of the fact it will be a item that is desirable for different audiences.

If you look at prices now? The Final Fantasy set with it's collector boosters and collector Commander Decks are scalped at highly inflated prices. We are talking about Commander Booster boxes going for $600-700 on the secondary market. So there is some inflation due to the IP. The Final Fantasy set sold $200 million in one day. A $70 FF commander deck is being scalped for anywhere between $90-120 currently.

I do think $40 is a bit steep. Promos in a TCG are not really anything new. Pokemon has done them, but there you typically get them in a set like a Elite Trainer Box ($50 MSRP), or special set ($25-75 MSRP). Even accessories like Playmats, Deck boxes, etc. are being scalped. Just because they have "Final Fantasy" on them.

If it is just Magic the Gathering players? I could see them selling the figure along and keeping the card. I can also see Legends collectors selling the card.

So at the end of the day while I don't like "FOMO" I would say if you really want it? Is it worth that extra $10 to you to know you have it versus trying to find it later at a inflated price? If it is any solace to you? You can probably sell that card to someone who does play Magic. You could probably sell it for $10 or even more. Promos can be odd. Some Promos can be highly desirable and sought after. Others? Are fairly inexpensive. Hard to say if Spider-Man is bigger than FF. Final Fantasy has a huge following and Spider-Man has huge global appeal with countless merchandise, comics, movies, etc. It is still likely going to do very well.

Again I'd say if you really want it? Pick it up and move the card along yourself instead of rolling the dice.

TLDR: I personally would have liked to have seen them maybe include two play boosters in there with the promo and figure at $40. But even if someone buys this at $40? You are getting a figure you want. And you can sell the card yourself.

I plan on buying the figures and hope to recoup some cost by selling the cards. I know nothing and care to know nothing about MTG. I plan to buy Man-Wolf, MJ Iron Spider and Agent Anti-Venom and pass on battle damaged Spidey.

I've seen a lot of people criticizing that Rogue head from the two pack, but I think it's an upgrade on the single release.

I will say that something I've noticed and not really seen talked about a lot is that the Legends team is really leaning heavily into "action hair" lately.  It doesn't look bad per se, but it's kind of weird to emphasize a look that only fits with a few different poses (or forces us to imagine our figures are standing in very windy weather).

That Storm looks awful. At least this time they corrected her classic outfit with gold bracelets instead of black. But her torso looks wrong in comparison to every other Storm (non classic outfit) they've done, and given her a terrible face this time around. Also you cant swap one of the better heads, because they made sure the skin tones wouldn't match. And I get that the Gambit here looks like its from the animated series, but still, he looks way too puny.
