Spider-Man: Brand New Day Non-Spoiler Movie Review

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has hit theaters as Tom Holland dons the mask of Spider-Man for a fourth solo outing - seven outings total if you count Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. Solo outing isn’t really a fair description since every Spider-Man movie from Sony has featured some kind of MCU guest-star. In the first movie it was Iron Man, the second Nick Fury, the third had Doctor Strange, and for this one we saw among others Punisher and Hulk. Yes, there were others that made appearances in this movie, but if I told you who that would be considered a spoiler.

This movie focuses on Spider-Man’s struggle as he deals with the loss of all his friends and loved ones (from the events of the last movie) while facing a strange new threat from someone or something with the ability to jump from person to person to control them.

As far as how this movie ranks with the other Sony/Holland Spider-Man movies, I would say it ranks pretty equal with the last one, “No Way Home”. Even though I liked this movie as much as the last one, it was for very different reasons. The thing I liked about the last movie was the return of older Spider-Man villains and the previous Spider-Men (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield). It was really much less about Holland and his version of Spider-Man. In this new movie, I felt Holland really shined as Spider-Man and finally came into his own. Now don’t get me wrong, this is still not comic book or animated series Spider-Man. Tom has created his own unique MCU version of Spider-Man, and even though I know some want a more true-to-comic Spider-Man, I am okay with Holland’s take on him. Most of the MCU versions of these characters differ quite a bit from their comic book counterparts.

To me, what always bothered me about Holland’s take on Spider-Man was that he always felt more like a sidekick than anything else. In this movie, I felt like Holland’s Spider-Man stepped into the role of one of the premier heroes of the Marvel Universe. This was also my favorite version of the Spider-Man suit in a live-action form. While internally you still felt the Iron Man influences with the AI computer, on the outside this was the most comic book accurate depiction of the character. At first I wasn’t fond of the idea of having the web shooters on the outside of the outfit, but after seeing the plot reason for that it didn’t bother me as much.

Another thing I really liked about this movie was how they really tried to make the audience feel like you were web-swinging along with Spider-Man. I didn’t even see the movie in 3D or IMAX, just on a regular screen, but thanks to the improvements of special effects, they did a really good job of making you feel like you were swinging along with Spider-Man in NYC.

Probably my most favorite thing about this movie were the interactions between Spider-Man and The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). It’s been said that since the two actors in real life have known each other for a long time, that the chemistry between the two really sparked in this movie. I don’t think that is an exaggeration. I don’t know if the interactions between the two characters are what I would call comic book accurate, but I really enjoyed it nevertheless. I really hope Sony and Disney find a way to get these two characters together again on-screen, and I would love to see Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin and maybe even Charlie Cox’s Daredevil join them.

One area where I felt this movie missed the mark a little - I would have liked more development on the Peter Parker front. Peter is on his own living in NYC, yet nothing reveals how he makes a living or can afford the things you see him have. I suppose he could have gotten a large payout of money from a life insurance policy from Aunt May’s death in the last movie, but still it would have been nice to see more development of the character which always played a large role for Spider-Man in the comics.

There were a few other things in the movie that left me scratching my head a little, which is hard to talk about without getting into spoiler territory. I hope and even assume some will be addressed down the road in other movies. Overall, I thought this was a very enjoyable movie and would recommend you check it out.

I love it. I didn't like how they made THAT character the villain but they way they went about it was understandable. I also see why Hasbro only did Spider-man and Hulk for the movie. (Well, you can count Punisher as well)

I loved this movie. I felt like it was a ton better than NWH, which I wasn't in love with. This actually made me Want to watch NWH again and appreciate the good parts more. I felt like him and Frank were awesome together, and some of the best parts of the movie. What this sets up is shaping up to be amazing! (I was gonna use a couple of different words, but I don't want to be too spoilery)

I understand completely what you are saying, but I'd debate on who the actual one is later when more comes out if ya get me.

I just got back from watching and I thought it was really great. I agree that the stuff with Spidey and the Punisher were quite entertaining. The characters do seem very comfortable with each other and it's easy to accept they have a lot of history.

Saw it today and loved it. It really got me in the feels quite a few times.  Anytime a movie does that for me, it's winner in my books. The main story held together well and I really got into how the movie a lot of the time felt like the video game. There were a few things that bothered me but I'll wait for a spoiler post to voice them.

Spider-Man does some heavy lifting at the box office for it's opening weekend setting a new record at the box office by having the biggest opening weekend of any movie in history.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" brought in $360 million domestically over the weekend. The previous record holder was "Avengers: Endgame" which back in 2019 brought in $357 million (not adjusted for inflation).

The previous 2021 “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie brought in $260 million and 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” brought in $257 million.

"Brand New Day" and "Endgame" are the only two movies to ever bring in more than $300 million on it's opening weekend.

This seems to put a dent in any argument that says people are tired of Super Hero movies. I would say if you make a GOOD super hero movie with CHARACTERS people care about, they will come. That theory will further be put to the test when Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters later this year on December 18.

Well deserved. This was not only the best MCU Spider-Man movie but the best live-action Spider-Man movie ever made. And for sure one of the best MCU movies since Endgame. I loved every minute of it and I really hope we get to see this turn into a new Tom trilogy. I'd love to see him complete his second trilogy before he transitions to Miles' mentor.

$360 million DOMESTICALLY.  That's nuts. If you're lucky nowadays, that's something a movie might do worldwide.

I've pretty much stopped buying physical movies, but Disney won't get this for like 3 years or whatever cause of Sony.  So I usually buy the Spidey movies.  This one was so good, I just preordered the second I saw this.

Agreed, but I would also say we need an updated Hulk after that monstrosity, lol.

Saw it with Wifey last weekend, we loved it! Thoroughly enjoyable start to finish. My critiques are minor, ala Scorpion not having any kind of mask or helmet with that elaborate scorpion armor just looked odd, but whatever. Jean Grey being the baddie....didn't see that coming, but it was interesting take, and I really enjoyed that actress's performance. Frank and Spidey make for quite the odd couple, but you know....I kinda dug it, lol! Any how, really happy for the film's success!
