Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game’s Secret Wars Expansion Takes Players To Battleworld

The Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game: Secret Wars Expansion is now available, bringing one of Marvel Comics’ biggest reality-shattering events to the tabletop. The 256-page hardcover expands Marvel’s d616 role-playing system with a campaign framework centered on Battleworld, the patchwork planet created from the remnants of a destroyed multiverse.

The expansion comes from writers Matt and Marty Forbeck and Alex Irvine and is designed to be used with the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game Core Rulebook.

At the center of Secret Wars is a familiar but radically transformed Marvel setting: Battleworld. The multiverse has been destroyed and its surviving fragments have been assembled into a single world ruled by God Emperor Doom. Players are given an adventuring framework that lets them travel across Battleworld's disparate lands while attempting to save what remains of the Marvel Multiverse.

That setup gives the RPG something particularly useful for a tabletop campaign: an excuse to put virtually any Marvel character, alternate reality or genre into the same story.

A campaign can jump between wildly different corners of the Marvel cosmos without having to explain away every continuity contradiction. That's essentially the appeal of Secret Wars translated into role-playing form — the multiverse isn't a problem to solve. It's the playground.

The expansion isn't simply a collection of Battleworld lore. Marvel says the book includes new rules for handling Rank X characters, the game's highest tier of power, intended for characters whose abilities operate on an almost unbelievable scale.

Marvel Studios' Avengers: Secret Wars movie is currently scheduled for December 17, 2027, following Avengers: Doomsday in December. While the RPG expansion is based on the comics rather than serving as an adaptation of the upcoming film, the arrival of the book places the tabletop game squarely in the middle of renewed mainstream interest in Marvel's multiverse.
