Sebastian Stan says he pitched Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige on a solo Bucky Barnes movie inspired by Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 crime drama Sicario.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Stan revealed that he floated the idea of a smaller-scale solo film centered on Bucky and a deeply personal mission. The concept, he acknowledged, was offered “half-joking,” but Feige apparently was receptive.

“We keep a real small budget,” Stan said. “It’s about a guy who thinks he recognizes someone from his past that had something to do with when, you know, he was brainwashed, and he gets obsessed with this person. He goes on a whole journey to try to figure out who this person is. It’s a thriller.”

The proposed movie would mark a departure from Marvel’s typically sprawling superhero fare, trading world-ending stakes for a more intimate story rooted in Bucky’s complicated history and psychological scars.

For now, however, there’s no indication that a standalone Bucky Barnes film is moving forward. Stan is set to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday this December, with the actor also potentially returning for next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars.

Honestly I would love this, Bucky solo movie would hit, Written By Ty Sheridan, maybe directed by David Mackenzie, or if we got really lucky The Cohen brothers... so it could have like some No Country For Old Men or Come Hell or High Water vibes, but I mean really in truly, Ty writing and Denis directing well then it could really be like Sicario.

I'd watch it. I was actually hoping that season 2 of Falcon and the Winter Soldier would just be his series. So much more they can tell for Bucky and he seems ready to do it.

As much as I love Anthony Mackie and thinK hes cute and whatever, and is a solid believable character, um we can give Bucky the Shield soon, because honestly Bucky is one of the most complex and compelling characters in the MCU, and really deserves much vaster storytelling, and the character can totally carry mutliple movies on his own, stories from the past, the present, current. Like let's be honest we all know Winter Solider and Civil War are amonsgst of the best movies in the MCU, and Buck was a massive part of those.

They should pepper in some smaller character driven lower budget stuff. At least as a special on D+. Those could be a little artsier too. Maybe break the trope of comic stuff needing to be a huge spectacle all the time. It would be good for the genre.

As much as I'd love to see this, I highly doubt it would happen. Obviously not confirmed but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Bucky dies in either Doomsday or Secret Wars. He's a legacy character that people love and it would be an extremely effective way to show the brutality of Doom. I could maybe see a Winter Soldier solo film happening as a prequel set before Thunderbolts but I don't see them following Bucky too much farther after Secret Wars if he survives.
