John Landgraf, CEO, FX Networks & FX Productions, announced today during the Television Critics Association press tour that the FX series “Legion” will be returning for its third and final season this June.

Landgraf explained that “Legion” Executive Producer/Showrunner Noah Hawley had planned for the series to run for only three season from the start.

"I think endings are what give stories meaning," Hawley told sources.  "I always thought about this as a complete story, and it felt like three acts of a story."

"What the show is following is this cycle of mental illness. We met David [Dan Stevens] who had been at his lowest point and tried to kill himself, then he meets Syd [Rachel Keller] and he gets balanced out. He's on his meds. He gets out and everything's going great for a while, and he thinks maybe I don't need these meds. He goes off meds the and spirals down, which is where we find him now," Hawley said. "The question now is can he get back to some kind of good place, or is he gone for good? Once we tell that story it feels like we'd be going back to the beginning of the cycle."

Legion, based on an offshoot of the X-Men franchise that debuted as a comic in 1985, centers on David Haller (Stevens), whose history of psychiatric issues lead to his discovery that he has mutant powers.

For the third season, Harry Lloyd will take on the role of David's father while Stephanie Corneliussen will play David's mother, Gabrielle.  Along with Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder, Jeremie Harris, Jean Smart, Jemaine Clement, Katie Aselton, Navid Negahban and Hamish Linklater also star.

Hawley executive produces with Simon Kinberg, Lauren Shuler Donner, Jeph Loeb and John Cameron.

Probably for the best.  Loved the 1st season but season 2 wasn't as good imo.... while it still had some amazing scenes and moments, overall too much wheel-spinning, too much weird for the sake of weird, and those jon hamm "lessons" were annoying.  I'm always glad when a series goes out on a high note rather than dragging things on forever (ex. X-files), so hopefully this show will bounce back in season 3 and have a strong finale.

Hawley chose to take a break from Fargo after 3 seasons so this isn't all that surprising.  Looking forward to his next project and am glad that Legion was ever made in the first place, it is certainly very different from the rest of the marvel tv series out there.
