I love these one shots. They give us minorities a chance to shine, but I am still waiting for Marvel to create a superhero with Aspergers.

Well, I don’t think they’ve been super specific about the nature of Cyclops’s autism. I wouldn’t say he’s a textbook study in Asperger’s, but he’s definitely got some characteristics.

My favorite X-Men may have Autism like me? That is so *earmuffs* awesome! My favorite X-Man is someone I can relate to.

Yeah, he definitely has autism. It took them nearly 60 years to canonize it (check out Marvel’s Snapshots: X-Men #1), but a lot of people suspected it for a long, long time.

I mean, confirmation bias is real, so who knows? I doubt every writer who ever wrote Cyclops had autism in mind for the character, but his characterization has usually been consistent with it. When I met Chris Claremont, I asked him about the theory that Eric the Red was always intended to be Mystique (which he denied), but I didn’t think to ask him about Cyclops.

Anyway, back on topic, the Legacy issue of Voices was fun, and I look forward to this one too! My daughter still asks me all the time to read her the Lady Deathstrike and Emma Frost shorts, and—less often—the Jean Grey one. Jean’s her favourite character, but I think she can relate better to fancy nails and not wanting to do laundry than she can to failed attempts at botany. I actually didn’t realize there were other Voices issues, so now I’m gonna have to go back and read those!

Thanks. I wasn't sure if they were able to do something like they did with Onslaught and actually connect to the real history of the X-Men.

Why do you think Eric the Red would be Mystique? Does that solve something for you, or just put her origin somewhere?

I never understood that persona anyway. Why and how did Cyclops do it in the first place, why did it become a separate entity during the Phoenix storyline, and then become Magneto in the 90's.

Yeah, it isn’t explicitly that, but it’s also not not that, if that makes sense. Like they didn’t just recount a bunch of events from prior continuity and say “Look! See!” The issue is a story about when he was a kid in the orphanage and it’s consistent with existing continuity, but not directly related. Obviously, though, it exists as a means of explaining sixty years of characterization, just not through direct examples.

Just a compelling theory, which you can read about here: https://fanfix.wordpress.com/2011/06/11/who-claremont-originally-intended-eric-the-red-to-be-a-disguise-of-part-1-in-a-series-of-3/

I couldn’t say! I barely recognize anything prior to Giant-Size X-Men #1 as canon, since it’s all so inconsistent and poorly written. Something about rescuing Polaris from Magneto without him recognizing Cyclops?

I think your other questions are more or less what led to the formulation of the theory above! It didn’t make a lot of sense without answers that never got provided.

Is he left out? Have they given a full list of characters? If previous volumes are any indication, the characters on the cover aren’t necessarily the characters who get stories.

He's been getting the short end of the stick ever since Ewing stopped writing him, he didn't even appear during the last Black Panther solo where is had all the African-American/African characters in the one issue fighting against the cosmic empire

I would say it's because they wanted to focus on Marvel's biggest/best known black heroes for the cover (since almost everyone else there is someone who has some sort of high profile mass media presence), but then I noticed Night Thrasher, lol.

(No shade; I like the character, he just seems like a bit of a deep cut compared to the rest.)

Oh, damn, turns out what I read wasn’t technically part of the Voices series, but seems to be the same basic format, which is what got me confused. I read Women of Marvel #1, but the cover artwork featured Storm, Elektra, Gamorra, Valkyrie (Jane Foster), and Shuri… of which only Gamorra had a story inside (along with Mystique, She Hulk, Marrow, Peggy Carter, Emma Frost, Medusa, Marvel Girl, Misty Knight, Lady Deathstrike, and Hela).
