  1. Hey thanks everyone! Yep, it's my own design and not based on anything really other than the theme of a Samurai Iron Man.
  2. This guide has been requested quite often and I would of had it done earlier but I was looking for some sort of pre-assembled kit that could be fit into most figure. Well I just couldn't find one so this guide will help you make your own LED setup and install it into most hollow-chest figures. Keep in mind this won't work for all figures and you'll need to modify the steps to fit. But the basic principal is there, build a case, wire the unit, placement of the parts, etc. I recommend you get the Cold Heat soldering tool from Radio Shack to solder with. It's 0 mess, won't burn you, and works so much better than the always-hot tools that stink up the place. Custom LED Guide Hope this helps and good luck customizing!
  3. "Stark Industries is pleased to present its next in the line of functional armors. Wether you're fighting off Mongol hoards or dealing with pesky Ninja, the Samurai Iron Man suit is prepared for the task!" After seeing so many incarnations of Iron Man I had to tackle the Samurai armor one. But I didn't want to go the green/black/chrome route. Instead I stuck with the original colors but mixed them up a bit with black and silver as well. Samurai IM was made from a Movies Masters Dark Knight Batman body and head/hands/feet from the Face Off Iron Man. His armor is rearranged a McFarlane Halo 3 Brute Chieftan armor, wrist claws from a House of M Wolverine flight pack, and the back guards from a Sigma 6 Samurai Snake Eyes. Combine them all together and he's ready for some feudal action!
  4. Hey everyone, just completed my Eye and Flesh Tone Painting Guide! I know it took a long enough but I hope it will help you detail your figures and add new techniques to your hobby. Also I found some great brushes, Dynasty Eye of the Tiger brand. I've used them for well over a month now and can recommend them as the perfect hobby brush for all your customizing needs. Best of all they're really inexpensive, last a long time, and paint precisely! There's a link in the guide so you can check them out. Jin's Eye and Flesh Tone Painting Guide Enjoy!
  5. Here's my take on the 'battle damaged' Iron Man after he gets shot out of the sky by the tank. He has his little rocket-launcher that can be attached to his arm too. I used a Prototype armor movie Iron Man figure for this figure and cracked him open, installing a really small LED system in his torso. It has a center sphere and inner ring glow when you have the chestplate off and then spreads out to a full glow when you pop the chest on! Also there's a dedicated on/off switch so the light stays on. I scuffed him up something terrible and gave him dust/splatter effects because getting shot right between the eyes with a tank shell leaves a mark or two. Enjoy!
  6. He's green, he's slimy, and he's come to devour your planet! Shuma Gorath is a custom that has plagued me for over 3 years as I've been trying to find the perfect base for him. Well, perfect base for his tentacles! Rubber snakes didn't work, squid arms had suckers, and everything else I found didn't bend. Then one day I came across McFarlane's Grendel's Mother. And behold, that was what I needed! Six bottom halves of Grendel's Mom later I had his tentacles. They're bendy and they spin! His body was hand-sculpted from Aves Fixit Sculpt and Apoxie Sculpt around a large 'light up christmas nose' that when you push the button on the back, pulses with light! I was going to blow $70 on a glass eye but it turns out they weren't completly round and I wouldn't be able to mount it with glue. The nose was just a buck. I think I made a good call there. So there you go folks, Shuma Gorath, one of Marvel's lesser known characters. Enjoy!
  7. Hey there all! I have a rather large update of characters here, been busy with the marvel Legends again! First, Iron Man in a somewhat-movie version with dark metallics: More pics---> HERE Stealth Iron Man movie version: More pics----> HERE Tony Stark in black suit with repulsor gauntlets: More pics---> HERE Civilian 'cowboy' Wolverine: More pics-----> HERE And a Symbiote Spiderman with 4-foot long wire webline. More pics---> HERE You can find their individual writeups on what parts they're made from on their respective pages. Enjoy!
  8. Figures.com will have an article on Kratos next Thursday but since he's going up tomorrow there's no use hiding him. Kratos was made with the Sigma 6 'Dark Ninja Master' body, Recondo hands, and Long Range head. Had to resculpt the shoulders, biceps, head, and thighs. I gave him the weapons of the Ares Armor because they're really close to the same scale and looked cool. Added weathered chain to the knives that you can wrap around his arms. The toga was part of Cobra Commander's cape too, all nicked up. This is an 'animated Kratos' so he's not super detailed with blood or cuts eveywhere. I tried to detail the eyes/scar tho. More pics!---->http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...oys/Kratos.html War Machine is well, War Machine! I had a lot of requests to make a seperate one rather than a 2-pack and he's made of the same DC Armory Batman base as my Iron Man. I'm also making a Silver Centurion Iron Man as well from that base. Just for all of you, I armored his thighs so you don't see the 'banded metal' effect, lol! Used the rest of my War Machine parts like the head and chest-piece, then used Front Mission robot parts for the arms/hands, backpack, and backpack-mounted weaponry. Look, he has little missile launchers on his calves! Those came from the Kid Connections MARS transforming set. To top it off I added a laser-pointer/LED light pod as an accessory. His gatling gun folds for storage with a magnetic latch. Tons more pics here!----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...hineArmory.html Enjoy!
  9. First it's the Invincible Iron Man made from a DC Armory Batman figure. He has a new scratch-scupted head, modded chest, filled sections, and double ball joint wrists so he can hold his palms flat to fire his repulsor blasts. I did the metallic armored look with a basecoat of black, heavy silver drybrushing, then multiple layers of clear red and yellow. Turned out to be my favorite Iron Man so far, something about his presence rocks for me. More pics here!-----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...nManArmory.html Next up is Cable in civilian clothing. I wanted a Cable but not the same old comic version. There was an extra Guile body laying around without lower legs and as luck would have it, Marvel Toy's TNA Lance Hoyt's lower legs fit right on without any modding! Even the pant sculpt matched up, like the figures were made to come together, heh. A quick headswap with a Magneto head, Modok's arm, and Thorbuster Iron Man's hand, Cable was done. But he needed something more... So I whipped up some removable armor for him in case someone wanted that armored-up Cable look. More pics here!-----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...s/CableCiv.html Enjoy!
  10. You're all very welcome, just trying to keep any problems from cropping up in the future for us customizers. Ah! There's another not-on-the-label-warning Van Flyte! Do NOT use superglue on any cotton material. It can actually catch fire! I'm going to add that to my Saftey page when I have it all written up. Usually just superglue on like shirt-material won't catch fire but you will notice it harden really fast and release some nasty fumes. A Q-tip smokes sometimes, and if you use a bunch you can actually catch a cotton ball on fire. It's not on the label but check the MSDS page for super glue here, page 3: http://plantwo.byu.edu/building/msds/super%20glue.pdf "Contact will wool or cotton may result in a strong exothermic reaction that may result in a fire." Oh the joys of chemistry.
  11. More Iron Man figures and this time it's my War Machine National Guardsman 2-pack. War Machine was made from a ML Modern Iron Man with House of M IM forearms, Transformers accessory for the shoulder cannon, and destroyer droid guns for the wrist cannons. Changed up the head a bit and added War machine shoulders/stomach along with a lot of random parts. National Guardsman was a LCBH Super Patriot with Ult Iron Man head/shins and House of M IM hands. A government issue paint/decal job later and the team was done! I went with a government theme for the National Guardsman (catchy name) since the Vault Guardsman suit was designed by Stark Industries anyway and War Machine needed a lacky. More pics, click here! ----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...WarMachine.html Enjoy and I hope these inspire some more awesome Iron Man customs from you all!
  12. Stealth Iron Man was finished a few days back but Tony was still on the table. Now they're finished as a set. You can swap out Tony's head for a helmetless look on Iron Man and change out Stark's hands for IM's repulsor gauntlets! You know, for when Ultron crashes the morning meeting. He's painted to resemble what Stark's wearing in the new movie too. Iron man was made from a House of M iron man body, war machine hands/forearms, and modded Thorbuster IM head. Stark was made from a Dr Strange head with sculpted hair and a DCSH Clark Kent body. The repulsor Gauntlet hands were from an old 5" Avengers Ultron figure that I had saved the parts from all these years. I knew he'd come in handy! Thanks for viewing!
  13. Ahhh, good ol' turpentine, that bugs my nose too. The mask will take care of those fumes as well Arrow. And what is truly 'good ventilation'? Just a large open room? Your overhead fan on? A window open? It's a general precuationary statement that people tend not to look to deeply into. To completly avoid superglue fumes from rising up and getting into your lungs you would have to be outside with a fan blowing directly across your workspace. Since we all can't customize in those conditions and we're usually stuck in a garage or room, that's why I suggest the mask. Why take the chance right?
  14. This post is meant to inform you, not scare you, as to the issue of Super Glue Sensitivity. As you know I try not to blow things out of proportion and I don't misguide people with my information. I take the hobby of customization very seriously and look to help everyone I can no matter their level of involvement in the craft. I'm sure you all know what Super Glue is. It's more scientifically known as Cyanoacrylate Glue and almost every customizer uses it to adhere plastic parts together and what not. We use a lot of it, more so than regular folks who just need to repair a mug or a fingernail once a month. We use this stuff every day sometimes. And there lies a danger not many are aware of. Without all the fancy science-speak about cyanoacrylate monomers and such, here's the skinny: Your body will eventually react to an overexposure of Super Glue vapors and you will suddenly become allergic to it. Scary? Could be. Some people use it a few times and become allergic. Some people use it for 5 years and become allergic. It depends on how long you've been using Super Glue and how your body reacts to it, each person is different. But no matter who you are your body is still absorbing something and it's like a ticking clock. The bad part is that once you develop an allergy to Super Glue it's there for life. In all the reported cases I've checked through, even asking my two medical friends, there's no real way to reverse it. You'll always have a reaction after you develop and allergy to it. One minute you're feeling fine and gluing a door to your Jazz figure and the next your eyes are swelling shut and you can't breathe. Most commonly it's a respiratory attack because breathing in the fumes is what does it. Nobody has reported developing an allergy (unless they were naturally allergic) by just touching super glue. The harmful stuff is absorbed through your lungs, not your skin. You might be familiar with my friend Black Arachanis who does figure head casts for the customizing community? He's now officially allergic to super glue and the one who got me looking into this. He'd spend hours a day gluing little guide-sticks on to the figure's head before making a mold and was exposed to super glue fumes the entire time. After a few years of this his body suddenly fought back and he couldn't breathe. He was looking for a substitute for super glue because he couldn't work with it anymore. That sudden allergy threatened his hobby/business. Then I thought... good lord, I use that stuff every day. I can smell it, stings my eyes sometimes. I've been using it for years, on a regular basis since the first Marvel Legends figure series came out, back in 2002 I believe. I also use epoxies and Polyurethane Resins which are known to cause a sensitivity issue faster than super glue. So here I am playing Russian roulette with my health! I searched the web for what kind of precautions you should take and turned to the commercial industry. Car manufactures, the people who spray resin on boats, auto paint guys, what did they do to avoid exposure? Without spending thousands of dollars for self-contained respirator units or those body suits I found that you need a simple respirator that cleans out Organic Vapors. A simple dust mask does nothing for fumes, it just removes particles. Only a mask with filters certified to remove organic vapors will protect against super glue/paint/epoxy/resin fumes. After calling some shops getting prices and checking on line I found a mask that does what you need and for a very good price. 3M Organic Vapor Half Mask It also turns out the mask has pads that remove particles from sanding/dremelling. The link above also has the best price I could find for one, given shipping costs and it was based right here in California, shipped to my door in 1 day. The mask is extremely comfortable to wear and honestly, looks cool, like some Metal Gear spy gas mask when you put it on. I know what you're thinking tho, "I have to put that thing on every time?" It's not hard and goes on/off in 2 seconds. One strap goes around your neck and the other over the back of your head. Or you can just use the back of the head one. I could breathe easier in that than I could in a normal dust mask, which surprised the hell out of me! Makes a cool 'pssssht' noise when you exhale and I bet I could use it for part of a Helghast costume for Halloween, heh. Both the organic and particle filters are replaceable. You breathe through that mask when you're working with super glue. I'm sure if you just needed a dab or two you could skip it, hold your breath or blow the fumes away, but I'm using mine every time. And especially when I use my epoxies/solvents too. I don't smell any of the chemicals I work with and no longer get headaches after working with my resins. It's the best $30 I ever spent for customizing in my opinion. And for anyone who kitbashes on a regular basis I can't stress enough how important your health is. Half the stuff we use is toxic and we're usually in a garage/basement/enclosed room doing this right? Ok, enough talk. Take this information as you will. Shop around if you want a different mask but make sure it removes Organic Vapors, that's the important thing. The link I provided was cheaper than the ones I found at the Auto Parts/Home Depot store and didn't even come with the particle filters. Tho the organic vapor filters will remove particles, they'll just clog up with those first and are more expensive to replace. Want some reference to superglue/chemical sensitivity? http://www.v2rocket.com/start/scale/fr/health.html http://www.detectoprint.com/article.htm (read the 'Don't get stuck or worse' part near the bottom) And you can google Super Glue Allergy or Super Glue Allergic Reaction to find more.
  15. AMG, a Marvel Legends figure! With the new Iron Man movie coming out I figured why not, everyone's expecting one right? Here's the finished figure. Made from a House of M Iron Man body, MODOK baf forearms/hands, and a custom head that started out as a Thorbuster Iron Man head, then heavily modded. The control panel is finished too. It lights up and stays on in two different modes too. Made from a Code Lyokos accessory and some tubing. Read one of the screens, you may get a chuckle, hehehe... More pics!---> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...IronManMov.html
  16. I cut a small notch under the finger where it connect to the hand and heated it, bending it and gluing it in place. Only takes a minute or two. There's no town-store that I know of that sells the magnets other than Radio Shack, but you're paying $2.99 for just two!! Trust me, order from http://www.gaussboys.com/magnets/discs/ , they shipped to me super quick and I got 70+ magnets for like $12!!!! Way, way, way worth it. Seriously.
  17. Hey cool, I aim to inspire! The Hulk head is from the 'Movie Poseable leaping' Hulk that came out with that turbine-engine thing attached to him by a cord.
  18. Ho! Woah! What's this? It's a Red Hulk!! Someone graciously tipped me off to the existance of this new character that will be featured in Marvel Comics 'Hulk #1' on sale in January 2008. Until then we don't have any idea about his character, if it's even the real Hulk or just another Stark clone. I really liked the design tho, he reminded me of Shin Akuma for some reason! Probabaly the eyes and hair. Red Hulk was made from a Planet Hulk body with Movie Hulk's head. I sculpted the hair, veins, and torn pant sections from Aves Fixit. Can't wait to see what they're doing with the Hulk next year but for now this custom will have to tide you over. Enjoy! More pics here!!!----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...ys/RedHulk.html
  19. Just got finished with my 'classic' repaint of the ML Fantastic 4 Dr Doom. Basic repainting, paint the armor black, drybrush silver, seal it, light green tunic, dark green washes, etc. I really went to town on the face under the mask and practiced my icky-burnt-blistered-nasty-flesh techniques. He has little patches of hair in placers... ew. Gave him some magnetic attaching booster flames for his back jets, an energy blast that fits over his hand, and a cool base. It's Doom! More pics, and the before/after pic-----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...oys/DrDoom.html Enjoy!
  20. Thanks everyone! People either love this venom or hate him tho, heh. You all like the odd proportions I used?
  21. So many people have asked me for a Venom without out the blue shading and I just had to oblige! He also has bendy tendrils and a nifty personalized base. More pics!------------> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J.../VenomBase.html
  22. I used the SOTA SF Gen fig. And thanks for the kind words!
  23. After seeing that pic of Xorn meditating in his white outfit, I just had to make him. Thanks to the person who suggested I give him an 'energy head' too! He has interchangable head and hands. I even repainted his mask and did every single tiny line in the eyes. Whew. Lots more pics! -----> http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/J...sToys/Xorn.html
  24. Hey, thanks for all the compliments! Magneto's shading is part purple, part black on the red base. Sentinel's is just black on hus purple with blackline and some washing on areas.
  25. Actually that's a Mongul head underneath! I sculpted the face straight on there. And check Marshalls, I found 3 Monguls there and just about every time I hit Wal Mart there's one on the shelf. Thanks for the kind comments too!
