I have a story, from a colleague who was working in the Marvel Bullpen during that time.  THIS IS RUMOUR.

According to the story, the Clone Saga was all dreamed up via a consultation between Marvel........and Todd McFarlane.
Apparently all the Image guys were invited back inside by Marvel to "consult" periodically ( Before Heroes Reborn), and were seen by staff numerous times.

Todd suggested the Clone Saga idea, ....and Marvel bit.
And the speculation about the story was that it was two-fold:  That it was the stupidest idea Todd could come up with, AND that it was DELIBERATELY INTENDED to SABOTAGE Spider-man ( at that time) so that Todd's Spawn title would beat Spidey in sales.  Which it did, apparently.
    And Marvel bit.
Again, this is RUMOUR, but I think if you look at how Marvel was doing at the time, the fallout of the story and the reactions to it, it does seem to fit that scenario.  But you all decide...I think it makes for a funny anecdote

Nope, the clone saga was the brain child of Terry Kavanagh, which then got out of hand thanks to marketing and executive meddling. The origins of the Clone Saga have been well documented and none of them ever mention McFarlane. People seem to forget that while conversational, the Clone Saga was a financial hit for Marvel, that's why it kept going.

Still I think we are going to be going off topic, lets keep the clone saga stuff for when marvel ruin Ben again with Chasm and focus on this lackluster idea of making Peter a Goblin again!

Ugh... Have comic writers really gotten to the point that they can't come up with something completely fresh that isn't already based on existing concepts/characters? I understand that Marvel has been around for like 80 years, but is there really nothing new that they can do with Spider-Man that isn't a rehash of old ideas, or in this case, an amalgamation of characters? It seems like they have hit a creative wall recently and they haven't been able to get Spider-Man to successfully climb over it...

Spider-man has been creatively dead since the Clone Saga in the 90's

Interesting. They could do a Spidey BAF wave with Stegron as the BAF. But if they go out of the box and pick a character not strictly associated with Avengers/X-Men/Spider-Man, I'd like to see the Griffin (the mutated version from the 90s Namor series). Now that they've got proper wings courtesy of the Angel, they could really do it up right, if they work it. Or, save Griffin for a Sub-Mariner wave....

Given it's their anniversary I hoping for either F.A.C.A.D.E or Spidercide as the BAF
