Sources have informed Deadline that Velvet Buzzsaw's Zawe Ashton has been set as the villain in the next installment of Captain Marvel 2. Nia DaCosta has been tapped as director on the film from a script by Megan McDonnell. Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris are also onboard to star in the project. No additional information on the exact characters but sources say Ashton will be the main villain, though this can change over time or additional villains can be added. Ashton is TV credited with Fresh Meat and recently starred with Jake Gyllenhaal in Netflix’s Velvet Buzzsaw.
Deadline is reporting that director Nia DaCosta has been tapped to direct the sequel to Captain Marvel. DaCosta is coming off helming the anticipated reboot of Candyman. DaCosta takes over the directing reigns from Anna Bodn and Ryan Fleck, who directed the first movie. The scripted was penned by Megan McDonnell, a story editor on the Marvel-based series WandaVision, with Brie Larson returning to star. The first Captain Marvel movie was released in March 2019 and grossed $1.13 billion worldwide. Disney and Marvel Studios had no comment.
According to THR, Megan McDonnell who has been working on the upcoming Disney+ WandaVision series will also be taking on head writing duties for the second Captain Marvel movie which will star Bri Larson. According to the report McFonnell has entered the final negotiating stage to seal the deal with Marvel Studios. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck who worked on the first film are said to not be returning for the sequel but are looking to work on a future Disney+ Marvel series. Captain Marvel 2 is likely to open sometime in 2022.
