Variety has confirmed from sources that the Disney and Fox's superhero thriller, 'The New Mutants' will finally see an official theater release on August 28th. Tickets go on sale on August 18th. Disney has been bouncing the release for the movie since 2018 and it was expected the company would continue to postpone it or export the film to Disney Plus or Hulu. The movie was originally under 20th Century Fox, but went through numerous reshoots which changed the movies release date five times. “It’s for sure opening August 28th!” one exhibitor wrote to Variety. 'The New Mutants' will be the first new theatrical release from a major studio since the pandemic forced U.S. cinemas to close in March. Check to see if your local theater has reopened and will be showing the movie as only 1,309 of the 6,021 venues in the country have reopened, according to Comscore. This includes movie theaters in New York City and Los Angeles, which are still closed without a set date to reopen. Directed by Josh Boone, “The New Mutants” features an ensemble cast — including Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy and newcomer Blu Hunt — as young mutants trapped in a secret facility against their will. The movie is expected to be the final entry in the “X-Men” franchise, the 13-film series that stretched from 2000’s “X-Men” to 2019’s “Dark Phoenix.”

Last Friday the world was rocked by the sad and surprising news that Actor Chadwick Boseman had passed away after loosing his battle with colon cancer at age 43. Reports have stated he was first diagnosed with cancer back in 2016, two years before Marvel's Black Panther movie premiered. The general public was unaware of Boseman having cancer, even after recent images of the actor surfaced showing he had lost an alarming amount of weight. Apparently Disney and Marvel Studios didn't know he had cancer either. According to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel's Kevin Feige wasn't told about the cancer until getting an urgent email on August 28, the day the actor passed away. According to the THR article, Disney was totally unprepared for the actor's passing and is now scrambling to try and figure out how to proceed with the Black Panther character that Boseman almost single handily made so famous. Until about a week ago Boseman, who according to a source in the THR article was convinced he was going to beat the cancer and be able to begin work on the second Black Panther movie, which was set to go into production next March. Most seem to agree that the two options for how Disney will proceed is to either replace Boseman with a new actor to portray King T’Challa, which many agree would be very difficult to do. Or they could make T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright) the new Black Panther which is in keeping with a storyline from the comic books. For me personally it is hard to imagine anyone in that role but Boseman himself. Because I know how important the Black Panther character is to the overall MCU, I know retiring the character completely isn't really an option for Disney. While I didn't personally know Boseman, from everything I have seen and read about him, my gut feeling is he would be most happy if Shuri (Letitia Wright) was allowed to take over the Black Panther mantle so she could become an inspiration and role-model to young girls, like his portrayal of the character did for young boys.

Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS) and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) today announced a renewal of Hasbro’s rights under its strategic merchandising relationship for major Disney entertainment properties Marvel and Star Wars. Hasbro today held their Q4 2019 Earnings Conference Call where CEO Brian Goldner spoke to members of the financial media. During the event there was no mention of whether Hasbro had renewed their licenses with Disney for either Star Wars or Marvel. For those not familiar, the current licenses will expire at the end of this year. While Goldner would not commit to any future plans beyond this year for those brands, or their continued releationship with Disney, he did say he remained positive on the prospects of them continuing to work together. While one would expect some kind of official announcement to come soon from either Disney or Hasbro on the future of the Star Wars and Marvel licenses, it's not terribly surprising that it did not come today. Hasbro will be holding a full Year 2019 Earnings Conference Call and Annual Investor Update at the New York Toy Fair on February 21, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time. If there is no announcement at that point about continuing on with these licenses, then fans might want to start panicking.

FOX has decided not to renew its sophomore drama series The Gifted for a third season. The family adventure series, set in Marvel’s X-Men universe, comes from 20th Century Fox TV, which now is part of Disney. Disney can possibly find a new home for the series within the Disney network. The show is produced by Marvel Television, which currently has series on Disney-owned Freeform and Disney-controlled Hulu.

For those of you into Disney's line of Marvel related Toybox figures, we have a look at two new additions to the line. The first is a Miles Morales version of Spider-Man as well as a new version of Iron Man. Both figures look to be simple re-paints of the previous Spider-Man and Iron Man figures but I like the look for both. These figures which are sold as Disney Store exclusives are currently available for purchase on the Disney website. Check out the official images below.

According to Variety, Marvel Studio's is looking to have Winter Soldier and Falcon team-up for a limited series on the upcoming Disney streaming service. Malcolm Spellman who has worked on such TV shows as Fox's Empire is being tapped to write the story on this one. Falcon and Winter Soldier are played by Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan and been in multiple Captain America and Avengers movies. Other characters previously reported to be getting the limited series TV treatment for Disney's streaming service include Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Unlike the Netflix Marvel shows which could also eventually end up on the new Disney streaming service, these shows will be produced by Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige who of course work directly on the MCU movies.

Update: I like my idea of the Black Order better but as some have noted for the blacked out silhouettes the one on the right is more likely a Venom which would make the one on the left more likely Spider-Man. Probably the same Spider-Man that will be coming with the Buggy. On the Star Wars side we saw them do the same thing with Han and Chewbacca, releasing the figures on single card and with a vehicle. The new Disney Toybox catalog is out and with it is several new reveals for their Marvel line. Shown below via slowmotoys we can see images showing off an upcoming 2-pack featuring Hulkbuster Iron Man and Hulk as well as Spider-Man with his Spider-Buggy. We also get our first look at the upcoming Thanos figure as well as a grey hulk. The final 2 reveals are blacked-out so we can only guess what they are. Based on the silhouettes though I am thinking these might be based on Thanos' Black Order members. Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw perhaps. If you aren't familiar with this line, they are 5" articulated figures put out by Disney and sold as Disney Store exclusives. The regular figures cost $12.95 each. We have no idea how much the two packs will be or if the Buggy is actually in scale with the figures since they have never done vehicles for this line before. The designs of the figures in this line are loosely based on the old Disney Infinity game and often the figures feature costumes similar to those worn in the movies. We don't have specific release dates but likely we will start seeing these all except for the blacked out ones hit Disney stores within the next month. The blacked out ones are done as teases for the next wave.

In light of the recent firing of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn, Disney has opted to put production of the movie which was said to begin shortly on hold for now as they begin looking for a new replacement director. According to THR, this is being done more for regrouping purposes than anything else. The movie was slated for a 2020 release but an actual date had yet to be set by the studio, so it's unknown how much of a delay this regrouping will cause for the movie's actual release. Rumors have suggested that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is being strongly considered as Gunn's replacement. Gunn was fired last month for old inappropriate tweets he had made on Twitter several years ago in regards to rape and pedophilia that the director has claimed where just bad jokes. Despite an open letter put out by the cast of the movie asking Disney to reconsider their decision to fire Gunn, the studio recently stated they will be standing by their decision. All the cast have remained silent on the matter since then except for Dave Bautista (Drax), who has been shooting out tweets attacking his employer for the decision. In one tweet he posted "Thanks @Disney !! Making America great again" and more recently on Thursday he tagged Disney in a tweet featuring disturbing clips of Mike Cernovich, one of the conservative figures responsible for bringing the old tweets to light that got Gunn fired. Disney has had no comment in regards to the disgruntled actor at this point.

The votes are in and according to THR, both Disney and Fox Shareholders this morning approved the $71.3 billion deal merger deal between the two companies. The deal has been said have regulatory approval and last month the U.S. Justice Department did give it's blessing for the merger. The deal does not include Fox News. The deal is definitely good news for Marvel fans waiting for Marvel Studio's to regain the rights to popular characters such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four, however many fear this will give Disney a virtual monopoly on the overall movie industry which is not viewed by some as a good thing. What are your thoughts, is the Disney/Fox merger a good thing and which Fox owned Marvel character do you want to see appear in the MCU first?

The newest catalog for Dinsey's line of 4" Toybox figures has been released and in it features one new unknown Marvel figure. The silhouette of the figure is blacked out and while often times it is pretty easy to tell based on the shape what character it is, this one is a little tough. My best guess is Thanos. Looks like it may have a bald head, big chin and be wearing a large glove. Only time will tell. What figure do you think it is? Let us know in the comment section below.
